I always just put it in my pocket. They make passthrough charging dongles, never had an issue with one.
How do you plug something not designed for your port into it though?
Ofcourse you can use it like that, but it's not made to have something plugged into it at all times. The headphone jack is much longer and therefore stronger, a type-c or lightning port is kind of questionable at best
