In light of the #buyFromEU movement several databases and websites emerged around the idea of buying European, and local first. Coming from different communities overviews of products and services can (for example) be found at the following websites:

If you are using Firefox or Chrome (derivatives) you can be nudged to do better by using the open-source Go-European-Plugin:

If you really want to start and go European in your personal- or business-life, there are already some starting points and infopics circulating.

Coming from a technical perspective and in an ideal world, open-source solutions are preferable over walled gardens. Chosing them would - in the long run- ensure that you can swap services more easily at any time. But we need to be realistic and acknowledge, that some people are just searching for easy drop in replacements and services.

Just as a starting point, this is an selection of alternatives for digital services. It is not exhaustive, neither really opinionated. It shows the highlights and source where to find other solutions.

A selection of digital alternatives (WIP)

This list is a selection of few digital alternatives if you decide to buyFromEU (and friendlies). Links to other lists are appended for further reading.

Hi, can anyone explain what the fuzz about organic maps and the fork CoMapsis all about?

I mean Organic Maps forked maps.me and CoMaps forked Organic Maps. What is the reason behind the last fork? I'm too old to keep track 😩

EDIT:

https://openletter.earth/open-letter-to-organic-maps-shareholders-a0bf770c

Community contributors to Organic Maps have expressed serious concerns about the project's governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community.

There will be an AMA with Fairphone "on the other platform starting with an r".

Maybe a good opportunity to voice the criticism found in this post.

Hi. I thought about creating something like https://european-alternatives.eu/, but where the community can insert new things easily, and focused on hardware (previously mentioned webpage covers software only).

So we would have an accessible database of EU-made hardware controlled by an EU crowd.

Do you think this is a good idea to have something like that?

I quickly created a webpage for that and inserted a bunch of the stuff on it -> https://artemkakun.github.io/eu-hardware/ (hosted on US-controlled software, ironically).

You can easily add a new piece of hardware here -> https://github.com/ArtemkaKun/eu-hardware Just add a new .md file to the /content folder, name it after a piece of hardware you want to add, and copy-paste the structure from any other file in that folder. Then open a Pull Request so I can check it and add your changes to the main webpage. If you are unfamiliar with GitHub - just ask ChatGPT (or better Mistral Le Chat) for help.

I just created that webpage in 1 hour, I guess, to only check if this is something people find useful. If yes - I can add more features/better webpage and add more admins who can approve new changes. If no - I will just remove it.

Tell me what you think in the comments.

I wanted to spotlight a quietly massive success story in European digital sovereignty: GendBuntu - France’s custom Ubuntu distribution used by the National Gendarmerie.

The GendBuntu project derives from Microsoft's decision to end the development of Windows XP Back in 2005, France’s Gendarmerie began switching from Microsoft products to open-source software - starting with OpenOffice. Fast forward to 2024, and GendBuntu(Linux) is now running on 97% of their workstations (over 103,000 computers!).

France has shown what’s possible when a government actually backs open-source, in-house, and EU-grown solutions.
More countries should follow suit.

In less than three months' time, almost no civil servant, police officer or judge in Schleswig-Holstein will be using any of Microsoft's ubiquitous programs at work.

I'm building a small home server, and I'm looking for reliable and affordable storage. I'm looking for an SSD for the main system, and 8TB HDDs for the rest. What options do we have that are European? Goodram seems to be an option for the SSD, but what about the larger drives?

Are there any good single board computers developed/produced in EU or Europe? Something like Raspberry Pi.

Finally found one: https://meaningcrafters.com/produit/powerbank-alex/

I don't speak French but placing the order was quite straightforward. Shipping costs were a bit high, but totally worth it. ~~Highly recommended!~~

Edit: Probably too good to be true, see discussion below...

The posts on both the BuyInEU communities seem pretty serious lately, but after reading latest Derek Guy's (dieworkwear.com) "Excited to Wear This Spring" post, I found Filt - the French net shopping bag manufacturer that makes their bags (and other stuff) in France

I'm trying to build my latest web project using only European software and services, but there are so many web analytics alternatives. Does anyone have any experience with any of these? Any tips or guidance is very welcome.

For the 'goeuropean-nerds' out there, this is what I'm using for the other bits:

  • .eu domain
  • upcloud.com (finish hosting company, server located in Frankfurt DE)
  • Theia - Open Source IDE
  • Codestral (Mistral) AI agent to assist in coding tasks

Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to connect Codestral to any IDE (Webstorm, CZ or Theia) without involving Continue which I''m not sure where they're from, but I'm guessing US...

So any experience in picking a European Web Analytics service?
