There's lots out there, but which would you consider the best of the best?

This might be a different topic than usual, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on life, purpose, logistics, and mindset. I’m at a crossroads and would appreciate advice from those who’ve been there.

After two years of working random jobs in Australia and backpacking through Asia and many other trips on this beautiful planet before that, I’m back home in cold northern Europe, adjusting to society again—sorting out taxes, getting a car, and reconnecting with my old employer. But I feel disconnected, like life is passing too quickly. I’ve always dreamed of cycling to Asia with my best mate, and after years of preparation, I have the funds to make it happen. However, I’m torn.

At nearly 30, I feel the pressure to have my life together. I don’t want to rely on my parents, and my previous jobs, though practical, weren’t fulfilling. My passion lies in adventure, exploring this beautiful planet, and experiencing new things, meeting people before we are too old or unfortunate to experience these things. Yet, I’ve also felt lonely on the road and miss having a community or friends & family at times.

My plan was to reach Vietnam and teach English for a while, but I struggle with the balance between freedom and stability. Constant travel keeps you focused on survival—transport, food, shelter—making it hard to progress in other areas. I don’t want to be a "homeless adventurer,"... yet a part of me would like nothing better? The uncertainty excites me, but I fear the post-travel slump I just experienced and dont really have a set future plan since i hate to commit to things since i enjoy the freedom of choice too much!

There’s no one right answer, but I’d love to hear from experienced bicycle tourers—how did you navigate these choices? Any insights would mean a lot!🙌❤

Today i learn to Cycle as a 28 years old! I got Bicycle accident in my childhood and i had fear to Cycle again. 20 years later i learn how Cycle with ADFC Hamburg/Winsen.

I thank adfc team specially Dieter and Ingo. My trainer was Mr Ingo he is good trainer very respectful man and patient.

He gave me first day theory about highway code signs and important rules. Then we make practical until i was able to drive without fear.

Second day we make more practical and last hours we ride together to the city and he show me every sign in the streets.

I didn’t speak good germany but he speaks English as well.

Am very happy and my thanks to Ingo😊

Hey guys. Last year I did London to Istanbul, I’m now doing Istanbul to somewhere further east, hopefully as near to china as I can get.

I arrived today in Istanbul and I’m helping out a farmer for a month to allow the temperatures to rise.

I’ve been planning this trip for months, all whilst feeling so excited and ready. Now having arrived and trying to sleep for the first night, I’m terribly anxious about it all. I’ve gone from wanting to ride the world to wondering if I can even make it through turkey. I had a 60km stretch to get to this farm and already feel like I rolled the dice with some hairy motorway and dog encounters.

Wondering if you guys have ever had this feeling?

Thanks:)

Hi. It's my first tour, I'm 12 days in. Most days I'm riding 60-80km. It's summer here. I learned early on I need to drink and eat a lot! Even when I don't feel hungry. And I'm eating a lot of good, whole foods.

I took two rest days; one on day 8 and one today (there was heavy rain forecast, and I spent the day at an aquarium sketching the fish which I really enjoyed). I've been very happy and content every day except my two rest days. Both of those days I've felt anxious and overwhelmed, having to remember where all my things are, constant worry my stuff is going to get stolen or lost, just wanting to be alone.

But on the days where I'm cycling, I'm carefree. And feel confident chatting with strangers. It's like I need a big goal, the familiar structure, and lots of cardio every day to be happy. I feel like my normal depressed self on a rest day. I still bike 5-20km on a rest day, just very light spinning to sightsee and stay sane.

On one day my crank developed issues and I didn't feel concerned at all. At my campsite in the middle of nowhere, that night, someone loaned me a torque wrench and I was able to fix it. Cool. Today in a city with so many bike stores to choose from, my front wheel had play and I needed to do breathing exercises to calm down. 🤷‍♀️

I'm scared for the trip to end even though it has to end soon, because the bliss I've found just pedalling every day has been unbelievable. I've been so happy with all this alone time. It's just these days where I'm supposed to "relax" that I degenerate back into an anxious hermit.

Can you relate? How do you stay happy even on the days where you aren't going anywhere? Does having an objective or plan for the day help?

I was looking at visa requirements and lots of countries say that they want proof of a return flight. How do you handle this when you're crossing through one country to another? Would a country in Central America accept if you had a return flight to your home country from South America a few months later, for example? Do most of them even check for this if you're entering on your bike?

For those who do solo touring, what situations have made you feel most vulnerable or uneasy on the road?

It could be anything—a remote stretch with no sign of life for hours, a campsite that didn’t feel quite right, an encounter that left you unsettled, or just that gut feeling that something was off.

I’m not necessarily talking about direct dangers like bad drivers or mechanical failures (though those are welcome too), but the subtle moments that made you rethink your surroundings or feel exposed.

Have these situations changed how you approach solo touring? Any habits or precautions you’ve picked up because of them?

I’m preparing for my next long-distance tour and want to mentally prepare for the kinds of situations I might not anticipate—so I’d love to hear your experiences.

Not sure if this is an irrational fear or not. I always fly with my bike in a box, ditch it at the airport and then use a giant duffel bag on the way home. I keep the bag rolled up in a handlebar roll with me and dismantle the whole bike to fly home. It’s a PITA and honestly pretty hard on my gear. I’m headed out in a couple months and would love to not use a bag, but I’m terrified of not being able to find a shop to give me a box.

Has this ever happened to anyone or am I just being paranoid? My other concern is having to waste an entire day of my travel trying to figure out how to get a bike on the plane home.
