HELLO & WELCOME to Alternative Nation, the Fediverse's largest alternative & indie music community!

We are all so happy you are here. You love music, we love music, and here we are, headphones on, in our own little world happily outside the mainstream while also supporting the growth of Lemmy, Kbin, & the Fediverse at large. ๐Ÿ’•

Figured it was time to talk about recommendations on how to format your posts for maximum visibility & engagement and also let you know the different ways you can post to the community.

Sound good? Let's go!

. . .

โ˜๏ธ POST FORMAT RECOMMENDATION ๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŽต

Key word here is "recommendation". I don't think we need strict rules to post, but here's what I recommend:

  1. Band - Song or Album Title: At the very least, this should be included in your post title. Pretty standard way of identifying something. No worries about quotation marks, the text and the dash are more than enough. Obviously, if it's an article link, the article title would go here.

  2. [Description Brackets]: Totally up to you, but personally I've been enjoying adding [Fresh] if the song or album is pretty new within the last week or two or so, or adding [Stream] if it's a link to an album stream link on Songwhip. I also sometimes use brackets to indicate the source if it's an article like [BrooklynVegan]. Not a rule, I just think it's nice to give some cred out.

  3. Dates or small commentary after the title: Again, you do you. Year of release can be nice for older tracks & albums, or if you have a strong emotion about the album that you think needs to be in the title, go for it - though I think the caption section is probably best.

  4. Album Art/Image or Link?: Lemmy is set up to share an image or a link as the primary content. Personally, I love album art or a cool image of the artist and would rather share the link to the music, video, or article in the caption. Lemmy's auto-thumbnails seem hit or miss, so to me it makes a richer post. But again, you do you!

Great! But let's say you aren't posting from Lemmy or Kbin?

. . .

โœŒ๏ธ POSTING FROM MASTODON, FIREFISH, & OTHER FEDIVERSE MICROBLOGGING PLATFORMS ๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŽถ

While having a Lemmy/Kbin account is the best way to not miss any comments, you don't need to be on Lemmy to post here. By tagging "@alternativenation@lemmy.world" in a Mastodon, Firefish (Calckey), or other federated microblogging platform post, you also actually post to our community! How cool is that!

But the format of your post can get real janky if you don't follow a certain format. My recommendation is set up your Mastodon et al post in the following way:

  1. Make the 1st line of the post the title like "Band - Song or Album Title" - no hashtags or account tags here, they get real messed up on Lemmy.

  2. After the line break from the title, include your caption and any links. Feel free to add hashtags in the caption area (I know people follow hashtags on Mastodon et al)

  3. Include "@AlternativeNation@lemmy.world" in the post (just not in the first line, please). This is how the post gets posted here!

  4. Finally, I recommend adding an image to the post - this will be the thumbnail on Lemmy!

. . .

๐ŸคŸ HAPPY LISTENING! ๐ŸŽง

That's it y'all! Hope this helps. Please spread the word to all your alternative music fans here, on Mastodon, and even on Reddit. Let's build something special together.

Cheers,

ren ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’•

Upon reading that the backstory of a little-known band from Tulsa, Oklahoma, contains, among its extended cast of characters, Dwight Twilley, Phil Seymour, Arturo Vega, Hilly Krystal, Mike Hudson, Bob Mould and Tommy Stinson, one could be forgiven for expressing incredulity. And if one did, one is (forgiven). Forgiveness is important as toward it lies the path to redemption. Though not in need of personal redemption or the aforementioned backstory for that matter, this collection of songs โ€“ some issued, the majority unheard โ€“ hopefully redeems the time, care, talent and utter willfulness poured into them by the duo at the heart of our story, Walter Kleinecke and Mitch Griffin and their band The Jacks.

This captures a vintage performance with very good quality soundboard audio, coupled with slightly more gritty handy cam footage and a bit of TV broadcast vision edited into the middle.

The blurriness is authentic because, if I had of been in the audience, I probably would have had several ciders beforehand.

It's already Friday 14 Feb where I am, so that means that I have been able to stream the new Horsegirl album Phonetics On and On a couple of times, over breakfast. I really like it. This track is the ninth of the 11 songs on the album.

From the band:

Feather + Flask is a Folk Groove band hailing from Havre De Grace Maryland. Influenced by Indie Rock/Folk and the Psychedelic jam scene, the quartet weaves together 4 part harmonies and intricate jams with a respect for space. The band is comprised of Jack Quinn on rhythm guitar and vocals, Lisa Governa on percussion and vocals, Chad Januszewski on lead guitar and vocals, and Shelby Slomba on bass and vocals. From campfires to The State Theater, this group has forged an explosive following and respect in the Maryland music scene. The band hosts an open mic night at Market street Brewery in Havre De Grace every 2nd and 4th Thursday. The open mic is recorded and a new episode is posted each week.

Personally, I saw this band in Elkton, MD last week opening for the Dustbowl Revival. For a band so new, they have an amazing energy and talent. I enjoyed every second of their set and have listened to their tracks several more times. Looking forward to seeing more releases, but they fucking shine on the stage!

Thought I would share a track I just heard on a radio show I listen to. A gorgeous, jangly sound from this duo who are based in Wiltshire, in England. Album coming in March, they say.

Bitch Prefect were an Adelaide-formed, Melbourne-based act that got classified as part of a hyper-local genre known as "dolewave".

A band from Sydney who are a blend of jangle and punk rock. Their most recent release is from 2021, an album called Idiocracy.

Keep an eye out for a brief appearance from Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers in this video.

Before Sophie Ellis-Bextor became a million selling dance pop diva, she was best known for being the daughter of a childrenโ€™s TV presenter and also as the singer for this Britpop band.

the audienceโ€™s drummer was Patrick Hannan, who was previously in The Sundays.

As Iโ€™ve said elsewhere, I like a good rooftop music video.

Cover of REO Speedwagon "Keep on Loving You"
Vocals by Jack Black
Acoustic Guitar and Background Vocals by Kyle Gass

Part of the set of songs you can only buy today (Feb 7) via Bandcamp, to support charities supporting victims of the LA fires.

A good cause and only $20.25 gets you 90 previously unreleased tracks from artists like REM, Modest Mouse, TV on the Radio, Perfume Genius, King Gizzard, and many more (of course). Check it out, if you can, eh.

ETA: you can still support the fire victims without supporting Jack Black here. He doesn't get anything from this. Smh
