As already noted in the thread on our being defederated by lemmy.world, we are now refederated for the time-being. However, as noted by one of the l.w admins if there are any spamming issues we'll be back out again and if the upgrades stop we will have trouble with federation (lemmy.one is still not on the latest version, while we are), so there is still a need to sort this out.

That's good, but we need Tom to sort this ASAP.

I assume we still havn't heard form Tom?

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 1 points 2 years ago

I haven't and no-one else has reported contact.

[–] spacedogroy@feddit.uk 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well done to everyone who made this possible 🌠

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 9 points 2 years ago

We were pretty much at the mercy of the lemmy.world mods on this one.

[–] thehatfox@feddit.uk 6 points 2 years ago (2 children)

So has anyone managed to contact Tom yet?

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 18 points 2 years ago

My concern is that "Tom" was actually Michael Gambon - which is why we've not heard from him.

[–] Mex@feddit.uk 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Does anyone know this "tom" is?

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Pretty sure he's the MySpace guy

[–] 15liam20@feddit.uk 10 points 2 years ago

Oh really? I'll get in touch with him then. He's my friend.

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 5 points 2 years ago

In real life? Not that I'm aware of, that'd make all this a lot easier.

If the admin has bailed on this place then it might be time to jump ship. It's only a matter of time until they pull the plug.

The domain is fully paid up through to next year and there's no reason to suspect that the hosting will stop any time soon.

We've contacted the Admin through a few routes and we are hoping that gets his attention. We can then put into place other Admins and make sure everything is financial secure and doesn't just rely on one individual.

I tried contacting him here a while back. So far no luck. But I'm not gonna stalk him to get his own instance in order.. So I hope he pops up!

[–] Emperor@feddit.uk 5 points 2 years ago

Yeah, we've given it out best shot, it's up to Tom now.

There is a recent change in Lemmy's 0.19 release which would allow the import and export of user profile data, which in theory could allow easier migration between servers.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3976

Hopefully we won't have to resort to that. Also, it would require the admin to upgrade to Lemmy 0.19, which may not be guaranteed.

This kind of bullshit is why the fediverse will never become mainstream

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do we want it to become mainstream? I think there's a balance of a healthy thriving community Vs one being too large and the quality drops.

[–] peter@feddit.uk 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

A lot of people call it the reddit/twitter killer

[–] anothermember@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

I'd rather be better than Reddit than bigger than Reddit.

Instances becoming too big like lemmy.world has is a danger to the lemmyverse.

[–] antik@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

You post this on a neglected instance, ironically a good example on why it is important to make sure the instance you want to have an account or community on has enough active staff. Everyone can start an instance but keeping it up is no small feat.
