Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

Over the last few days, Thailand and Cambodia entered into a heightened stage of conflict due to a long-running border dispute. Like many problems on this planet, Europeans are ultimately to blame - specifically France. Certain sections of the border drawn up by France about a century ago were not fully agreed upon by both sides, with the ownership of some Khmer temples being the most visible points of disagreement.

Despite interventions in favor of Cambodia in the 1960s and later 2010s by the ICJ - one of the mainly mostly useless global institutions that liberals periodically disown - the border conflict has simmered at a generally low level. Of the two countries, Thailand is significantly more militarily and economically powerful.

Last Wednesday, a Thai soldier lost his leg by stepping on a landmine, prompting a rapid escalation between Cambodia and Thailand that has since resulted in dozens of deaths and tens of thousands displaced. Cambodia was willing to come to the negotiating table fairly quickly, but Thailand was more hesitant. International pressure on the two countries by Malaysia, China, and the United States eventually forced Thailand to the table, and they have recently agreed to an immediate ceasefire courtesy of ASEAN.

Notably, Trump refused to hold trade talks with either country until they agreed to peace, which suggests that he really wants a Nobel Peace Prize - which he seems a shoe-in for given that he's met the two most important requirements that several Nobel Peace Prize recipients have needed to meet in the past, which are: 1) start at least one war, and 2) accelerate the genocide of millions of people as billions more people watch on. His policies vis-a-vis ICE creating a domestic terror regime only further increase his chances of winning the prize.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

90,000 people marched across the Sydney harbour bridge for Palestine, 40,000 more than the organisers expected.

Israel [sic] abducted starving children at Gaza “aid” sites, then tortured them | Electronic Intifada

excerptOne of the children testified to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights that at the time of the kidnapping, the Israeli [sic] soldiers beat him with his hands and a stick and forced him to take off his clothes. He said that he and the other children were all placed inside metal cages that were one square meter large, where it was impossible to lay down or sit comfortably, and were given rotten food to eat.

“They then took me to a barrack containing four rooms with steel mesh roofs and concrete floors,” the child said. “The rooms had beds without mattresses and only one blanket. We were forced to remain seated on the beds all day and were not allowed to move.”

The child said that he was interrogated for a full week, with daily sessions of four-hour questioning about “Hamas, tunnels, hostages, cameras, handmade bombs, and identifying houses in my residential area.”

The Israeli [sic] interrogator, the child explained, “was dissatisfied with my answers because I had no answers to his questions. He beat me with his hands while my hands and feet were tied to a chair. Sometimes the interrogation was done without anger or threats, because the investigator already knew detailed information about my family, which made me fear for them.”

The child was taken to what is known as the “disco room,” where Hebrew-language songs “were played loudly, and the air conditioner was set to a high temperature. I was blindfolded and my hands and feet were tied to a pipe all day. I remained there for seven days on the floor,” he said.

How do they keep inventing new levels of cruelty

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

Dirlewanger behavior. It's so hard to accept that this is still happening. There has to be an end to all this cruelty, it's been two years of non-stop atrocities.

The majority of these took the Trump buyout offer, so they will still be paid for 6-8 months, depending on when they took the offer.

[–] Biddles@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

20000 jobs is a drop in the bucket. Millions of jobs are started or ended every month

[–] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

True. However, Fed Government is supposed to offset private job and income losses (counter-cyclical). And the private job market isn't doing very well either so much so Trump fired the BLS Commissioner. Instead, Government is moving in same direction as private sector (pro-cyclical).

The Kamala Harris campaign has made $7 million in 2025 so far! Being a Dem consultant is awesome.

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 35 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

from January

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/11/kamala-harris-victory-fund-recurring-donations-00197685

while a Harris Victory Fund donation page remains active on ActBlue, the fund itself is now defunct and any contributions go directly to the DNC

Mike Nellis, head of the Democratic online fundraising firm Authentic, said when his clients’ campaigns end in defeat, “there’s an expectation that they’re going to shut down the recurring donations because there’s no need.”

But Nellis, who was a senior adviser to Harris’ 2020 presidential primary campaign, said he was OK with the DNC continuing to pull donations from Harris donors

lmao

'Year of threats': Report reveals US-Israeli [sic] campaign to sabotage ICC arrest warrants | The Cradle

Israel [sic] and its allies have used threats, sanctions, and sexual assault allegations to stop the ICC from bringing Prime Minister Netanyahu to justice

this bad faith dinner in the excerpt is really gross to me given the level of current famine:

At the same time, Secretary of State Blinken and Thomas Lynch, a US advisor to Khan, sabotaged the ICC investigator's efforts to visit Gaza directly.

Lynch also tried to organize a dinner between Khan, Netanyahu, and Jewish-US lawyer Alan Dershowitz. The goal was to embarrass Khan by showing him eating a luxurious dinner with the Israeli [sic] Prime Minister, even as Palestinians in Gaza were starving.

One of those news aggregator accounts said this, I'm assuming it is bullshit (hope not!!!)!?

BREAKING: China has officially banned cryptocurrency trading, mining, and related services

[–] Lando@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

There is no credible news source on this. This isn't the first time this headline has happened either, China has "banned" crypto like 5 times now in the past 5 years according to western media.

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Algeria banned it last week too, r/Algeria is still mad about that

[–] ProletarianDictator@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

if a location subreddit hates it, you can usually assume that its a good thing

I saw a comment that said "the government doesn't want us to own Audis" amazing stuff

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

If you’ve been paying attention to news from China, the government is cracking down hard on corruption right now.

Corruption is so ubiquitous that we hear news of some important officials and major financial institutions being investigated and charged on corruption every month if not every week. It’s an open secret for many years and some of these people are just starting to get charged. You really have to ask how could this be allowed to go on for this long - the entire system is rotten to the core and they are just starting to take this seriously.

It is very clear that the government now wants to recover as much money that has been lost to replenish the coffers (when they can just create the money by running a larger deficit) as the economy is slowing down.

So it is not surprising at all that the government does not want people to hide the money somewhere else. Besides, the CBDC (digital yuan) is coming so it’s going to take over the role of crypto as well and directly controlled by the government.

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 34 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

i don't know if it's true, but it isn't particularly far-fetched
from what i understand, crypto in the PRC has been increasingly heavily regulated for a while
which you would have to do if you wanted to crack down on financial crimes

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

~~Why would you want this move to be not real?~~ It makes perfect sense. Crypto currency undermines capital controls amd other such financial regulations.

Only real downside is that some people need crypto to obtain certain medications or other items that are difficult to legally obtain. But in those cases, the use of black markets is still not very safe.

[–] WrongOnTheInternet@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

People go on about the electricity and water usage of AI slop (projected out to 2030), and crypto is literally orders of magnitude worse today

These kinds of struggle sessions always go too far. It's almost always leftists who share mostly the same ideals, but as soon as a difference pops out, people start calling names, throwing accusations, generalizing one bad take to the whole character of the other person etc. We can surely be more understanding, unity is what gives as the most strength, not being as purist as we can possibly be.

[–] LangleyDominos@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nobody on the left has formally reckoned with how the internet has changed interactions and discussions. You can give someone an excuse for righteous indignation and they become an absolute terror because their foolishness is somehow fighting the good fight. You also get their weird thing where people treat issues like metaphysical entities that feed on attention. If you just talk about one issue enough, it gets stronger. If you don't feed another issue, it starves and dies. I think that is mostly due to social media and the structure of forums imprinting on people's minds and they think that's how things in the world work. And it's not a matter of who owns the website. These issues don't go away just because it's a leftist website.

Sure it's been said before, but once again, in light of Trump's new thruthsocials. 1) Medvedev is not the official voice of the Kremlin, that's what MID (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) is for, while he can say whatever he wants. 2) Nuclear submarines have already been in place and aimed at Moscow/Washington, DC respectively. 3) Medvedev is there to show that if the US doesn't like the liberal Putin, they won't get an American stooge for a replacement, they will get a hardliner like Medvedev in his tweets and he will enjoy the popular support too.

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 38 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

I’m not so sure about this take to be honest.

Medvedev has been the bigger pro-US liberal than Putin throughout his entire career up until February 2022. He’s NOT a hardliner lol.

It was Medvedev who back then wanted to lick Obama’s boots so much that he promised to purchase an entire fleet of Boeing for Aeroflot, which directly killed off the Russian domestic aviation industry.

It was Medvedev who caved to the NATO invasion of Libya (UN Resolution 1973) and had his first public feud with Putin over the Russian media on this issue. Again, licking Obama’s boots.

Also, he loves watching Netflix. He’s the bigger lib than Putin lol. I don’t know who he thinks he’s fooling with his “nationalist” rhetoric but his entire career has a consistent track record of ceding to Western liberalism.
