This was never intended as a flag

"The barcode has been featured in a number of prominent European newspapers, mistakenly touting it as the new European flag to replace the current twelve gold stars. This, however, was certainly not the idea behind its conception. The barcode was merely a suggestion for an extra symbol, parallel to the existing EU symbols, to bring Europe in a new way to new audiences."

And vexillologists everywhere rejoiced.

Or had an aneurism. It's hard to tell

Some things are best rejected.

What product comes up if you scan it?

Maybe we should sort the colors, so it looks like this:
Pride Flag

The queer community deserves a better flag. The rainbow was great and made sense - the whole spectrum of the rainbow; everybody. Now it’s just displeasing to look at with clashing colors. Maybe a vexillologist can chime in to put that into better words.

This is not a critique of people, just my opinion of this flag.

"The queer community"

In fact what was wrong with queer vs an ever-changing acronym? Or could we just use rainbow?

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 3 points 2 weeks ago

I really like saying LGBTQ in a French way, though.

Many dislike queer because it is a slur, in recent years though it is being reclaimed more and more by the community.

I remember even just a few years ago you could tell just how politically motivated someone was by weather they identified as "queer" or one of the many individual flavors of the rainbow (lesbian, gay, etc)

It was a slur, then it was reclaimed but now it has fallen into disuse because of the acronym so it may have already slipped back into being a slur.

how politically motivated someone was by weather they identified as "queer" or one of the many individual flavors of the rainbow (lesbian, gay, etc)

Which was more politically motivated? Queer or the individual favours?

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

Queer was more politically motivated in my experience.

I dunno man, I really like the flag. Like you I dont have a good reason for why either, and thats fine, tastes are different.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I'd vote for that. 😋

Used the expanded version, which means it has more countries than the version in the post. It was made before Brexit and before the accession of Croatia and Romania, though

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Also, a version rotated to match other pride flags so that this, uhh... not-a-flag can look slightly more like the flag we're vaguely imitating here

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Neat, thanks. That works even better than I expected. 🙃

[–] federalreverse@feddit.org 15 points 2 weeks ago

Color puke.

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 11 points 2 weeks ago

That's not a flag, it's a printer error.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 10 points 2 weeks ago

Imagine having to remember this flag in school.

[–] oce@jlai.lu 9 points 2 weeks ago

If you flip it twice and shake it vigorously, nothing particular happens.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 7 points 2 weeks ago

Obviously it got rejected, it doesnt have the Romanian flag

[–] Kertyna 7 points 2 weeks ago

I think, out of fairness the french flag should be rotated 90 degrees.

[–] illi@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago

I can see why

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s not very pretty. But I like the concept.

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, the stars thing feels like it's just kind of another entity from all the countries, whereas this barcode drives home much better that it's a group of countries doing a thing.

[–] JackLSauce@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I see the problem: the lines should have been horizontal

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well, it be easy to identify on a flag pole, at least. You wouldn’t be able to spot individual details, necessarily, but what else would look this busy?

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

And America would rejoice for no longer having the most overstuffed flag.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

Terran Academy Scream

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have to say that is goofy.
