Really the most surprising thing about this whole debacle has been just how little support China has been able to rally, at least in public. I dont think they realized just how much ill will the wolf-warrior strategy had earned them over the past few decades.
Is the world going to switch to using Mandarin for the universal language?
There'd have to be some significant milestones:
China would have to produce entertainment content that rivals Hollywood In Mandarin
A programming language based on Mandarin would have to gain popularity
A large diasporia of Chinese speakers
Probably a large Imperial expansion of Chinese territory to other parts of the world
A change in internet protocol to favor mandarin-speaking channels or a new communication channel to rival "the written word" "radio" "telephony" and "the internet" that is purely Mandarin
A change in medicinal practice, pharmaceutical manufacturing etc under which speaking Mandarin is easier than any other language
China would have to gain unilateral cultural cache such that kids and adults alike see China as cool, powerful, interesting, exciting, friendly, aspirational, rich and free.
Not likely, English is used in the first place because of the British Empire, not the US.
Old sci-fi often showed the future being more Chinese orientated. Simply because of the amount of people there is. Blade runner is a great example.
Neuromancer as well (the book that is).
Probably not now. Perhaps in a 100 years, if the planets align. These things take time. Though i'm just an internet bozo. What do I know?
