The Pope's fucking dead.

He gave JD Vance three chocolate easter eggs, exchanged pleasantries for 17 minutes, and then keeled over and died.

What a way to go.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

After very limited battlefield testing since January 2024, and rumours that Russia has started deploying them, we now have video of jet powered Shahed/Geran drones being used on an attack on Ukraine alongside propeller powered drones, at Odessa. The turbojet engines of the new Shahed 238/Geran 3 produce a new distinct noise audible at the beginning and end of the video (the noise in the middle is from the propeller driven Shahed 136/Geran 2 drones), and two jet engine exhausts can be seen glowing in the night sky at the beginning of the video, with one of the drones likely being shot down by AA gunfire, the video cuts so it's unclear. There's also a potential glowing jet exhaust in the middle to the end of the video.

The Shahed 238/Geran 3 is a turbojet engine powered version of the Shahed 136/Geran 2. The PBS TJ150 turbojet engine allows for the 238 to fly much faster than the 136, the 238 can fly at speeds of between 500-600kph/312-375mph in level flight, and 800kph/500mph in a dive. The 136 has a maximum speed of 185 kph/115mph with its MD550 piston engine that powers a propeller. This turbojet engine will also enable the 238 to have a much higher flight ceiling, if that's desired. However , the turbojet engine takes up more space, meaning less fuel onboard and likely a shorter range, and requires jet A1 fuel instead of standard petrol/gasoline. The 238 comes in three versions, one with standard GNSS/INS navigation and guidance like the 136, one with a infrared camera for terminal guidance and potential operator control, and one with a radar seeker for use as an anti radiation munition to take out radars and air defence systems.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to British mass media claims of Russia supposedly agreeing to "freeze" the conflict:

In an interview with RIA Novosti on Tuesday, Peskov was asked to comment on a recent report from the Financial Times that claimed Moscow is ready to halt the hostilities in the Ukraine conflict along the current front line.

“A lot of fakes are being published now, including by respected publications, so you should only listen to the primary sources,” he said.

According to the FT article from Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to freeze the conflict along the current front line during his meeting with US special envoy Steve Witkoff earlier this month in St. Petersburg.

UN Warns of Escalating Gang Violence in Haiti, Calls for Urgent International Intervention - Telesur English

Article

The United Nations has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating security situation in Haiti, as rampant gang violence spreads to new areas and further destabilizes the nation. María Isabel Salvador Crespo, the UN Special Representative in Haiti, voiced deep concerns during a Security Council meeting, cautioning that the country is nearing “a point of no return.”

“With gang violence expanding into previously unaffected regions, Haitians face growing vulnerability and increasing skepticism about the state’s ability to meet their needs,” Salvador Crespo declared, underscoring the urgent need for decisive international assistance.

The UN official outlined how coordinated attacks by armed groups have strengthened their grip over the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other areas. In response, Salvador Crespo urged the Security Council to act swiftly to address Haiti’s immediate humanitarian and security needs, warning that failure to do so could cement the country’s worsening crisis.

A pressing concern remains the lack of financial resources to support intervention efforts. The Ecuadorian diplomat expressed unease over recent cuts in U.S. international aid, further complicating efforts to stabilize Haiti’s security situation. Additionally, due to the intensifying violence, the UN has significantly reduced its presence in the capital, where gangs now control approximately 85 percent of the territory.

“Without adequate and predictable funding, even a minimal UN presence may become unsustainable—precisely when Haiti needs us most,” Salvador Crespo lamented.

Haiti has long endured the brutality of criminal groups responsible for murders, assaults, thefts, and kidnappings, compounded by ongoing political instability. Since mid-February, a new wave of violence has surged, with gangs extending their operations to sectors that had previously been spared from the unrest.

Ukraine is ready to negotiate but not to surrender, deputy PM says - Reuters

Article

April 23 (Reuters) - Ukraine is ready to negotiate but not to surrender, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said on Wednesday as details emerged in media reports of a U.S. proposal for a deal which would see Ukraine give up almost all territory currently occupied by Russia. "There will be no agreement that hands Russia the stronger foundations it needs to regroup and return with greater violence," Svyrydenko wrote on X.

"Our people will not accept a frozen conflict disguised as peace," she added.

Media outlets have this week reported details of a broad proposal by Washington for a deal between Kyiv and Moscow which proposes the formal recognition of the occupied Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea as Russian as well as Moscow keeping de facto control of most captured Ukrainian territory.

On the other hand, Ukraine has pushed for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire with negotiations proceeding after it is established. "A full ceasefire - on land, in the air, and at sea - is the necessary first step," Svyrydenko said, adding that if Moscow instead opted for a limited pause, Kyiv would respond in kind.

Brazil supreme court judge orders ex-president Collor's arrest after corruption sentence - Reuters

Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes rejected former Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello's challenges against a previous conviction and ordered his immediate arrest. The order comes after the Supreme Court in 2023 sentenced Collor, the first president to win the popular vote after the end of Brazil's last military dictatorship in 1985.

Article

SAO PAULO, April 24 (Reuters) - Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes rejected former Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello's challenges against a previous conviction and ordered his immediate arrest, a court decision showed on Thursday.

The order comes after the Supreme Court in 2023 sentenced Collor, the first president to win the popular vote after the end of Brazil's last military dictatorship in 1985, to eight years and 10 months in prison on corruption and money laundering charges.

Collor's legal defense showed "surprise and concern" by Moraes decision, his lawyer said in a statement, adding the former president will however comply with the order.

Moraes requested a session with the full Supreme Court to decide whether to uphold or reject his decision.

The 2023 conviction followed Brazilian prosecutor's office accusation that Collor received around 30 million reais ($5.28 million) in bribes from a then subsidiary of state-run oil company Petrobras (PETR4.SA), opens new tab.

Collor took office as president in 1990, but did not finish his term as Congress decided to impeach him two years later amid a separate corruption scandal, from which Supreme Court acquitted him in 1994. He later was elected senator.
