Due to a request by @miz@hexbear.net, this thread's COTW is Qatar.

The ceasefire deal broke down early last week after Israel unilaterally changed the terms of the agreement and then blamed Hamas for not meeting them. Violence against civilians has rapidly accelerated to pre-ceasefire levels, with many hundreds dead already, aid once again cut off, and Israeli soldiers once again entering and occupying the attritional labyrinth that is Gaza.

I'm not yet in a position to make any solid predictions or analysis, as the geopolitical situation in and around Israel has changed fairly substantially over the last 6 months; in some ways benefiting Israel, and in other ways not. We know for sure how Hamas and Ansarallah are reacting (thankfully, with open hostility to both Israel and the United States), but the state of Hezbollah has been a giant question mark for months now, and precisely what Iran plans to do (beyond the usual level of supplying weaponry and intelligence to all the allies it can) is unknown. Syria will be almost certainly be a big wildcard, and we'll have to see if the compradors in Damascus can weather the storm.

Oscar-winning Palestinian director attacked by Jewish settlers and arrested, activists say - ABC News

Article

JERUSALEM -- Israeli settlers beat up one of the Palestinian co-directors of the Oscar-winning film "No Other Land" in the occupied West Bank on Monday, and he was then detained by the Israeli military, activists on the scene said.

Dozens of settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Susiya in the Masafer Yatta area, destroying property, said the activist group Center for Jewish Nonviolence.

They attacked Hamdan Ballal, one of the documentary's co-directors, leaving his head bleeding, the activists said. As he was being treated in an ambulance, soldiers detained him and a second Palestinian man, the group said. It said his whereabouts were now unknown.

"No Other Land," which won the Oscar this year for best documentary, chronicles the struggle by residents of Masafer Yatta to stop the Israeli military from demolishing their villages. It has two Palestinian co-directors, Ballal and Basel Adra, both residents of Masafar Yatta, and two Israeli directors, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor.

White House inadvertently texted top-secret Yemen war plans to journalist - The Guardian

Article

In extraordinary blunder top Trump cabinet members added Atlantic editor to chat discussing strikes on Houthis.

Senior members of Donald Trump’s cabinet have been involved in a serious security breach while discussing secret military plans for recent US attacks on the Houthi armed group in Yemen.

In an extraordinary blunder, key figures in the Trump administration – including the vice-president, JD Vance, the defence secretary Pete Hegseth, the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and the director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard – used the commercial chat app Signal to convene and discuss plans – while also including a prominent journalist in the group.

Signal is not approved by the US government for sharing sensitive information.

Others in the chat included the Trump adviser Stephen Miller; Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles; and the key Trump envoy Steve Witkoff.

The breach was revealed in an article published on Monday by Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of the Atlantic magazine, who discovered that he had been included in a Signal chat called “Houthi PC Small Group” and realising that 18 other members of the group included Trump cabinet members.

In his account, Goldberg said that he removed sensitive material from his account, including the identity of a senior CIA officer and current operational details.

The report was confirmed by Brian Hughes, a spokesperson for the national security council, who told the magazine: “This appears to be an authentic message chain, and we are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain.”

Hughes added: “The thread is a demonstration of the deep and thoughtful policy coordination between senior officials. The ongoing success of the Houthi operation demonstrates that there were no threats to troops or national security.”

Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he was unaware of the incident. “I don’t know anything about it. I’m not a big fan of the Atlantic,” Trump said.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, later released a statement saying: “President Trump continues to have the utmost confidence in his national security team, including National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.”

The incident is likely to further raise concerns over the Trump administration’s trustworthiness with intelligence shared by erstwhile allies – not least as Hegseth boasts at one stage of guaranteeing “100 percent OPSEC – operations security” while a celebrated journalist is reading his message.

The discussions seen by Goldberg include comments from Vance, who appeared unconvinced of the urgency of attacking Yemen, as well as conversations over what price should be expected of Europeans and other countries for the US removing the threat to a key global shipping route.

Security and intelligence commentators in the US described the breach of operational security as unprecedented – both for the use of a commercial chat service and for the inclusion of Goldberg.

In the US military, the highest political echelon and intelligence services operate under strict rules for communication of classified material and for the discussion of issues concerning operational security where lives and outcomes could be compromised by disclosure.

While Signal is regarded as a secure encrypted chat service, its weakness is that phones on which it is installed can themselves be vulnerable.

Among those aghast at the breach was the Democratic representative Pat Ryan, an army veteran who sits on the House armed services committee who described it using the second world war-era epithet “Fubar” – meaning “fucked up beyond all recognition”.

“If House Republicans won’t hold a hearing on how this happened IMMEDIATELY, I’ll do it my damn self.”

Shane Harris, a longtime national security reporter – formerly of the Washington Post and now with the Atlantic – wrote on BlueSky: “In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this.”

Goldberg writes that he was initially dubious about whether the messages might be some kind of foreign disinformation operation, but became convinced they were genuine both because of the language and positions presented and because the plan discussed coincided with an actual attack on Yemen.

One striking exchange involved Vance and Hegseth making disparaging remarks about Europe.

“The account identified as ‘JD Vance’ addressed a message at 8:45 to @Pete Hegseth: ‘if you think we should do it let’s go. I just hate bailing Europe out again,’” Goldberg wrote. (The administration has argued that America’s European allies benefit economically from the US navy’s protection of international shipping lanes.)

Goldberg continues: “The user identified as Hegseth responded three minutes later: “VP: I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC. But Mike is correct, we are the only ones on the planet (on our side of the ledger) who can do this.

“Nobody else even close. Question is timing. I feel like now is as good a time as any, given POTUS directive to reopen shipping lanes. I think we should go; but POTUS still retains 24 hours of decision space.”

In reality, about 20 countries are involved in the mission to protect shipping from Houthi attacks including British warships.

As Goldberg became aware of the attack on Yemen taking place, he recorded how he went back to the Signal channel:

“‘Michael Waltz’ [US national security adviser] had provided the group an update. Again, I won’t quote from this text, except to note that he described the operation as an ‘amazing job.’’’

A few minutes later, [another individual wrote]: “A good start.”

Not long after, Waltz responded with three emojis: a fist, an American flag and fire. Others soon joined in, including “MAR”, [Marco Rubio]. He wrote: “Good Job Pete and your team!!” and “Susie Wiles”. She texted: “Kudos to all – most particularly those in theater and CENTCOM! Really great. God bless.”

Rumor is that US Hedge Funds are already asking the federal government to prepare for a bailout. The last time that the US government bailed out hedge funds was when they bailed out basis trades. Basically, hedge funds are getting reliable profits from tiny differences between Treasuries and derivatives, but this is only profitable as long as the government bails you out when you would be taking a loss. Last time a government bailout of this sector happened was 2019/2020. Imagine playing in a casino and when you lose, the government covers that, but you are free to walk away with any winnings.

Sudan’s Military Recaptures Republican Palace Amid Ongoing Conflict - Telesur English

ArticleSudan’s military has achieved a significant milestone by recapturing the Republican Palace in Khartoum, a key stronghold previously held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Footage aired by Al-Arabiya on Friday revealed soldiers inside the partially ruined palace, celebrating their victory. The military, under the leadership of Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, has been making steady advances in recent months.

A Symbolic Victory Amidst a Prolonged War

The Republican Palace, a historic landmark dating back to British colonial rule, served as a heavily fortified RSF base. Its recapture is a symbolic triumph for the military, signaling its growing strength in the capital. However, the RSF continues to control significant territories, particularly in Sudan’s western Darfur region, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the conflict.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Since the conflict erupted in 2023, over 28,000 lives have been lost, and millions have been displaced. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated further, with famine affecting large parts of the country. Rights groups and the United Nations have accused both the RSF and allied militias of targeting ethnic African communities, allegations that both sides deny.

The Road Ahead

While the capture of the Republican Palace is a morale boost for the military, it does not signify the end of the war. Fighting persists across Sudan, with the RSF maintaining its presence in key regions. The conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution.

Eduardo Bolsonaro Flees Brazil - Brian Mier Telesur

Son of former president faces possible treason charges for working with US politicians to attack Brazil's judiciary.

Article

Brazilian Liberal Party lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and South American representative for CPAC, took a leave of absence from Congress today and announced he will remain in the United States to escape "political persecution" and pressure U.S. officials to impose sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes—one of Brazil's 11 Supreme Court Ministers—in an attempt to keep his father out of jail.

It is no secret that Eduardo Bolsonaro has been close to Steve Bannon and other key figures in Donald Trump's circle since 2018. Similarities in billionaire-funded social media tactics used by Trump and the Bolsonaros are living testament to this, and the closeness that Eduardo has to leaders of the American far right is also demonstrated by his presence at the January 5, 2021, "war council" meeting in Washington, hosted by Mike Lindell on the eve of the U.S. Capitol invasion.

Eduardo Bolsonaro immediately swung into action, contacting friends in the Republican Party and private sector alike. The next day, Rumble and Truth Social filed a frivolous lawsuit against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was in charge of the investigation against his father. On February 24, Republican Congressman Rich McCormick released a public letter to President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in which he called for punitive actions against Moraes, including "Magnitsky sanctions, immediate visa bans, and economic penalties."

On February 27, Workers' Party Congressmen Lindbergh Farias and Rogério Correia filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General's Office against Eduardo Bolsonaro for conspiring against Brazil with members of a foreign government.

"The individual in question, completely disconnected from reality and acting against Brazil's national interests, is encouraging a foreign government to impose retaliatory measures against his own country and one of the justices of the Supreme Federal Court," reads a section of the complaint. Judging him a probable flight risk due to his network of connections in the American far right, they requested that the Federal Police confiscate his passport. Time has proven them correct, but the police did not act quickly enough.

On March 13, the net began to tighten around Jair Bolsonaro as the Attorney General's Office officially upheld the indictment against Bolsonaro and his cronies, after a procedural period in which they were allowed to present their defense arguments. The Supreme Court then set March 25 as the date for the final review of evidence before formally setting a trial date.

This put Eduardo Bolsonaro in a quandary. With a complaint already filed against him for illegally abusing the power of his office to lobby for intervention in Brazil's internal affairs by a foreign government—a crime so serious that, in theory, it could result in charges of treason—he had to choose between keeping his position as Congressman and complying with national security laws, or renouncing and moving to Florida, like so many right-wing Latin American politicians before him.

Bolsonaro is claiming his leave will be temporary, but going on leave of absence will not shield him from criminal prosecution for abuse of authority, crimes against the judiciary, and violation of national security laws. Like all Members of Congress, he enjoys a certain level of parliamentary immunity, but can still be investigated and tried by the same Supreme Court that he has been publicly attacking for the past five years. So if, as he announced on his social media today, his plan is to stay in the U.S. to find some way to "punish Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes," he will probably have to stay there for a long time. The question is, how much damage can he do to Brazil’s national sovereignty while he’s up there?

JD Vance To Join Unwelcome U.S. Delegation To Greenland In Escalating Display Of Power

U.S. deputy leader J.D. Vance has announced his intents to get off the couch and join a high-level U.S. delegation that is currently in Greenland uninvited and unwelcome under the thin guise of attending dog sled races, fueling fears of American territorial ambitions masked as security concerns. Departing from previous cautious statements, Danish leader Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s acting prime minister Múte B. Egede has condemned the provocation, but Denmark’s dependence on the U.S. has left the Nordic hermit kingdom powerless to resist, highlighting Trump’s treatment of European vassals as subjects rather than partners.

Citizens of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, watched anxiously as two large Hercules planes from the American military touched down at the local airport this Sunday. The aircraft carried high-ranking American regime officials, staffers, and black armored SUVs. Officially, the Americans claim they are merely visiting to observe the annual Avannaata Qimussersua dog sled races sponsored by the local U.S. consulate, a cover story so flimsy it bordered on mockery. The delegation’s true agenda became undeniable days later when Vice President J.D. Vance announced via Twitter that he would join his wife, "second lady" Usha Vance, in Greenland on Friday, declaring his intent to “strengthen security for the Greenlandic people.”

“Many other countries have threatened Greenland and sought to use its territory to threaten the U.S., Canada, and of course the Greenlandic people,” Vance stated in a video, framing the visit as a protective mission. His rhetoric, paired with the abrupt escalation of the delegation’s seniority, has sparked alarm. Danish media is calling the Vance visit a "diplomatic declaration of war" and noting how unprecedented it is for s vice president to visit another country when he has verb explicitly told to stay away.

The delegation already present in Greenland includes U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and "second lady" Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President J.D. Vance. Notably, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is rumored to be joining later. Their presence, uninvited and coming at a politically sensitive moment as Greenland's parliament is negotiating a new governing coalition, is viewed as a direct challenge to Danish sovereignty over Greenland.

Danish leader: “President Trump is Serious. He Wants Greenland.”

Danish leader Mette Frederiksen has finally found her spine after months of cowering in Trump's shadow and has responded with her strongest rhetoric to date. In a recent interview, she made it clear that this visit cannot be viewed in isolation from the American supreme leader's repeated statements about wanting control over Greenland.

"President Trump is serious, and he is determined. He wants Greenland," Frederiksen stated. "This visit is not about what Greenland needs or wants. No matter how you frame it, this is an entirely unacceptable form of pressure—not just on Greenland and its leaders, but on Denmark and the entire Kingdom."

Frederiksen’s remarks mark a significant rhetorical escalation compared to her previously cautious stance. Critics like Pelle Dragsted from the Red-Greens, a pro-democracy opposition party, argue the shift is overdue: "The government has tried the other approach for months: Showing restraint and speaking Trump's language. It hasn't worked. Quite contrary. The US keeps repeating these very disrespectful and insane plans to take over Greenland". Dragsted argues that the cautious approach is being seen as a sign of weakness by Washington and that a more firm line is necessary.

However, while Frederiksen's words are strong, her government’s inability to resist the American Trump regime's provocations is glaring. A chartered plane full of Danish cops has been sent to Greenland, not to deport the unwelcome visitors but merely to maintain order while the Trump circus is in town.

Denmark remains firmly integrated in the American world order as a vassal of Washington, and Copenhagen finds itself trapped between maintaining its long-standing subservient role as a loyal U.S. vassal and responding to the most direct challenge to Danish territorial integrity since World War II.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also voiced his disapproval, calling the American visit a "charm offensive" designed to pull Greenland further into Washington’s orbit. "There is no appetite for this in Greenland or the Kingdom of Denmark," he stated. However, Denmark’s options for resistance appear slim, leaving the visit as a humiliating episode in the country’s relations with its increasingly aggressive overlord.

Greenlandic PM: “An Unacceptable Lack of Respect”

Greenland’s acting Prime Minister, Múte B. Egede, has repeatedly stressed that neither his transitional government nor Denmark invited the delegation and he asks all nations to respect the ongoing Greenlandic coalition talks.

Egede also issued a desperate call for urgent international support, stating, "It has not helped for Greenland to stand together. It has not helped to say no. Diplomatic attempts have failed. Now the international community must act."

However, it remains unclear who would have the power and interest to tell the American regime to leave Greenland alone.

His comments reflect growing anxiety among Greenlanders about the Trump administration’s aggressive approach. Greenlanders fear that Washington’s interest in their nation is not just economic or strategic, but territorial.

Besides a few local Quislings, Greenlandic society is virtually unanimous in rejecting the American schemes. As shown by the recent election, the discussion in Greenlandic politics is no longer whether the nation should be independent but rather how soon it should be independent. Greenlanders are Greenlanders, they are not Danes, and they are sure as hell not Americans. They know that the moment Washington sinks its claws into their land, any dream of independence is dead in the water.

Denmark’s Powerlessness on Display

Reports in the media suggest that Frederiksen's Social Democrat-led right-wing regime is panicking over the crisis, scrambling to expend all their diplomatic resources to diffuse the crisis.

Meanwhile, in Danish media the American provocations in Greenland are being compared to the build-up to Crimea's admission to the Russian Federation in 2014. Terminally online conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov has taken a break from foaming over the reactionary grievance du jour and has taken to Twitter to demand the immediate closure of the U.S. consulate in Nuuk. He writes: "No other countries would accept people who have openly declared that they are there to annex part of the country". He goes on to demand the immediate closure of the consulate to keep "saboteurs and fifth columnists" out.

The arrival of the U.S. delegation represents a stark demonstration of Denmark’s inability to enforce its sovereignty in Greenland. Despite Frederiksen’s strong words, the Danish government did not prevent the visit. Greenland, while officially an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has effectively been under American military occupation since a 1951 defense agreement and remains dependent on America for protection. This dependence severely limits Denmark’s ability to challenge Washington’s actions.

The current situation underscores a broader shift in U.S.-European relations under Trump’s second presidency. Traditionally, Western European nations like Denmark have enjoyed a privileged status within the American-led international order. Their ruling elites, deeply entrenched in Atlanticist ideology, were accustomed to a relatively cooperative relationship with Washington. However, Trump’s renewed push to annex Greenland signals a shift and an abandonment of polite liberal niceties towards Europe—Western European allies are no longer treated as partners, but as subjects to be pressured, coerced, and exploited, much like other regions under U.S. influence.

For years, European leaders have comforted themselves with the illusion that they are partners of the United States. This trip to Nuuk is a reminder that they are not partners. They are property. And when the landlord comes knocking, there’s not a damn thing they can do to stop him.
