I personally would have preferred markdown support, but this is a long overdue and welcome improvement.

No kidding! Are we sure it doesn't? I wouldn't be surprised if a reviewer simply didn't know that formatting could be applied manually (one can only hope anyway).

I recall they indicated why they didn't go with markdown in the official community.

I'm meh about this, I rarely felt the need for formatting, but I'm glad to see that little changes and progress is being made. There's also message editing now. So it's a bunch of things happening which is great.
