I'm yet another reddit refugee. Just wanted everyone to know that there's a combination emoji for a bee wearing a cowboy hat:

[–] kalanggam@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I hope you know this emoji has made it to the Discord 🀭 Welcome to Beehaw!

[–] toshmonaut@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Nice! Is there a public Discord server for Beehaw? I can't seem to find a link to one.

[–] kalanggam@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

We have a Discord but it's private for the time being, I'm sure it will return to the front page sidebar as soon as things settle more with the instance itself.

[–] alyaza@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

i'll DM you an invite to it; we just dropped it from the sidebar for now because we're already a little thin with attention and don't have discord mods yet who can specifically keep an eye on it.

[–] Maerman@beehaw.org 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Hi, I'm four babies in a trenchcoat. My interests include grown-up things like businessing and adulting. I am definitely an adult. Ignore the first sentence.

[–] ramius345@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Vincent Adultman :-)

[–] BobQuasit@beehaw.org 9 points 2 years ago

Hi! I'm not just a Reddit refugee, but an everything refugee. Or at least, that's how it feels. I've been online since the mid-80s, and I've seen platform after platform be acquired and burnt down under me. I'm pretty much used to it by this point.

That doesn't mean I like it.

I'm an old-time geek. Huge bibliophile, particularly fond of old science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, children's books, YA, classics, and humor. Oh, add graphic novels and manga to the list. I'm also a long time tabletop RPG player and GM. My system of choice is the Avalon Hill edition of RuneQuest 3; my RQ site might be the oldest one still existing. Of course I play other systems as well. I'm into deep role-playing, and would definitely like to find people who are interested in that sort of thing!

My primary activity over on Reddit was recommending books. I have a resource of nearly a thousand book recommendations that I have created over the years. Hoping to be able to make recommendations on Lemmy, too.

What else? I'm a pretty good public speaker, and was an invited program participant (i. e. panelist) at a regional New England science fiction convention for over 25 years. I'm an atheist, but I advocate tolerance and understanding between atheists and theists (and yes, I've done panels on that topic too; they were great).

I was a redhead when I had hair, with a redheaded son. I'm the single divorced father of a newly-adult son. I'm currently unattached. Oh, and I'm apparently demisexual.

I live in Massachusetts, USA. I like cats, cooking, walking, and well-written TV and movies. I've been refining my grilling techniques for about 35 years now, on a lifelong quest to make the perfect burger.

[–] OmnipotentEntity@beehaw.org 8 points 2 years ago

Hi, I'm Omni. Older cis het white dude. Likes math. Not as dipshitty as the previous two sentences imply, I hope.

In a previous life, I wrote a moderately successful indie game. Currently, working part time in R&D for a small nuclear engineering company, and spending the rest of my time in independent study. Currently working on group theory.

[–] ratboy@beehaw.org 7 points 2 years ago

Hello I'm a nonbinary/masc leaning lil guy. I work with high risk populations at a non profit in the pnw. Feels weird to not be a programmer or something, seems that's what all the bee-hawers and fediverse users are into these days. Um, I'm autistic and have adhd, in my mid 30s, like to ride my bike, play pikmin bloom, garden, and take up hobbies quickly and then leave them for like 3 years. Oh I am also a really yuge music nerd, like, actually. Mmmmmmmyeap

[–] Nix@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Glad to see that I am not the only one a bit lost but excited with this transition from reddit.

Hopefully this fediverse-thing will be way better and more resilient than everything past.

I was finally able to subscribe to other instances. YAY!

[–] PurrJPro@beehaw.org 6 points 2 years ago

An all pronouns using aroace agender with a deep love of tech, videogames, writing, art, and gender non conformity. I recently graduated from high school, and I am planning on going to tech/writing. I'm also planning on building my own PC soon! It'll hopefully help me understand technology a lot more :3

[–] modifier@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 years ago

I'm modifier, and until yesterday, reddit was my only social network-ish thing, and where I wasted much of the last 10 years.

My 30s are in my rear view mirror but feel closer than they appear.

I am married to my best friend, I work in travel and travel a lot for work and fun, I am sexually adventurous, intellectually curious, and musically promiscuous.

A number of cats live with me and graciously accept my offerings of food and adoration. When I'm not adoring them, I'm either reading, playing video games, or doing something related to maps or flags, though I've found that adoring cats is an activity that stacks well with many other activities.

[–] green_witch@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago

Hello, I'm green_witch!

I'm a travel-weary drifter from the festering ruins of "that place", where I spent most of my time lurking.

I enjoy herbalism, mycology, bushcraft, botany, nature, and consider myself a student therein. I'm unfortunately pretty timid, and my grasp on language is tenuous at best, but I'm trying to open up more and (hopefully) be a part of a community.

I hope we can all treat each other well and make something neat together.

[–] Nicktar@beehaw.org 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Hi, I'm Nicktar, end-40s software architect and creator of unfinished projects. I love to find out how stuff works and if I can make it better or different or repair it but once I figured out how to do that and and know that I could do this, I lose interest and it becomes work... So my place is filled with (partially) working prototypes like cat toys, hydroponic flowerpots, broken tablets halfway turned into interactive picture frames, disassembled cordless screwdrives that need a new battery... Also climate activist, table top roleplayer and currently quite busy playing around with Stable Diffusion

Hi! In an effort to not be a lurker, I’m going to introduce myself. I’m mid thirties, product manager by trade, dog person who recently came to have a cat when a kitten wandered into my house two weeks ago. Cis male. Bad at posting. Excited to see where this goes!

[–] Anissem@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 years ago

Former Digg / Redditor, glad to be a Lemming? Do we have a term yet? Ex video game developer, avid gamer and dog lover. Currently a freelance video editor. Really enjoying the vibe here and with Mlem it’s been more a less lateral move for me from Apollo. I don’t mind how new Mlem is and it’ll be fun to see the changes pop up day to day. Keep up the good work everyone!

[–] iamhazel@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

I apologize for the list of labels but I'm an atheist, autistic, agoraphobic, asexual, epileptic, trans, homeschooled-until-college 28-year-old.

If you met me you'd think I'm a relatively normal person though!

I'm a theatre kid working as a data analyst in local government healthcare.

I'm trying to learn Unreal Engine 5 but I'm struggling to keep going even though it's a lifelong dream. Though I've made good and rewarding progress and I took all next week off to let myself hyperfocus without getting fired.

The Wall by Pink Floyd is my favorite album ever, and the first piece of art to make me sob. Every. Damn. Time.

[–] ZenGrammy@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Hi all! I'm another Reddit refugee I guess. I just couldn't abide by their policies any longer so I deleted my 13 years of comments and my account and here I am.

I'm "just" a boring suburban housewife with an awesome dog and progressive political views these days, but I used to work in medical billing and I've raised two boys and two stepkids who are still in my life even though I left their dad many years ago. Five years ago my body decided to rebel against me and make me have a stroke. I am largely healed from that but it took away my active hobbies and I'm technically disabled due to chronic pain and some memory issues.

I have Huntington's Disease. I'm pre-symptomatic right now. I inherited it from my mother, who is currently living at a nursing home. I'd be stoked to find people who could relate to the whole genetic disorder thing. It's a heavy burden sometimes.

I've been active on forums on and off since the late 90's. I used to be a mod back when that was a new thing. I enjoy cooking and solitude and playing The Sims. I have a wonderful husband who also loves solitude, and we enjoy our solitude in the same house but different rooms most of the time.

I keep in touch with my friends and family through digital means for the most part because I can't drive. I meditate and loosely follow the Buddhist principles of letting go of negative emotions when possible and appreciating what is around me. I am a work in progress.

[–] Canadian_Bakin@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (2 children)

Hi all! Another one of those pesky "reddit-fugees” as it were. It was my only sort of β€œsocial media” which I mostly used to post pictures of things I baked and try to have positive interactions with other online community members. So needless to say I’m glad I found this server/instance and I’m looking forward to participating in the community.

Beeeeeeeeeeeehawwwwwwwww!!! 🍁

Hi, I'm an architect and I eat too much mayonnaise. Used to be on reddit and forums and bbses and I found my way here. I love reading scifi but I wasn't too active on reddit because of the enders game brownshirts. It's nice being here

[–] Olon97@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Here from Reddit (Apollo user).

I am a HS Biology teacher with a previous career in game development. Very involved in gamification and VR in education (creating in VR, the apps that can be used in a classroom are lacking at the moment).

If it dates me, I had a Digg account back in the day and have spent more time on MySpace than Facebook.

[–] ffmike@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

I dunno if I really qualify as a "Reddit refugee" as I wasn't particularly active there...a few dozen posts, a few hundred comments, all now deleted. But it was the current reddit mess that got me looking around for other communities and finding Lemmy & Beehaw. I've been online and in various communities since basically forever (Usenet, Puppy [the easier version of Fido to run on a first-generation PC], MajorBBS, CompuServe, The WELL, IRC, etc. etc.) but I promise to try not to play the "get off my lawn" card too often.

I had a medley of jobs for the most part in the tech space, and I've been happily retired for a few years now, because my DW has a good job with a BigCo and I prefer keeping the house clean to writing more code for other people. These days I mostly just try to get outside and hike as much as I can, but I like having at least a tiny bit of online community available.

Politically I lean pretty far to the left, having spent a chunk of my youth fairly active in anarchist circles. These days I'm more of a pragmatist who just wants people to be nice to each other.

It's possible that someone will recognize this username from elsewhere, in which case: yes, it's me, and no, I don't feel like discussing things from decades in the past.

[–] Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone 4 points 2 years ago

G'day all, Dalek_Thal here, having walked through a door to a new dimension by doing midichlorians.

Definitely looking forward to what Lemmy brings, my hope is that I'll get my old subreddits back, given time.

[–] TMoney@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

I'm a redneck from Appalachia that has been beaten down by the negativity in the world and from the hostility in anonymous online communities. It's crazy how hostile people can get when they don't think they'll get in trouble. Really loving how friendly everyone seems to be on here and I hope the good environment helps me become less antagonistic personally. Remember the human!

What's keeping me busy right now is working on my land cruiser and getting it into offroading shape. I love the gym and squats specifically. I made it to 435lbs before I got old and decided to take a chill pill. Playing Days Gone the game on my PS5.

[–] meldroc@infosec.pub 4 points 2 years ago

Hi, my name is meldroc, and I'm a Reddit refugee.

Currently, I work for a brewery doing GIS work - making maps that help sell beer. I'm in my 40s, in the LGBTQIA community, enjoy reading, gaming, retrocomputing, technology, dogs & cats...

[–] retronautickz@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Hi, I'm Pallas/retronautickz. I can't consider myself a refugee, even though I use(d) Reddit, because I'm not new to the fediverse and it wasn't the Reddit API changes that made me decide to try Lemmy, but rather wanting to try out other forms of federated social networks other than the one I already use (mastodon)

About me? I'm 29, vegan, queer, neurodivergent and disabled. My interests are languages, both learning and conlanging, and anything vintage (my username being a reference to this). If my profile picture isn't clue enough, I'm a big fan of classical music (and I've been since I was a little kid), but I love music in general and I'm open to listen/discover new artists and genres/styles.

[–] super_user_do@feddit.it 4 points 2 years ago

Hi! I'm Peppe, just your average end user with a little bit of poltiical conscience

[–] azureeight@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

Hoy~ I'm not really a refugee from anywhere in particular, I've been slowly squeezed out of social spaced for a few years now. I love people, but it's hard to want to participate when you get shouted down. Hopefully I've found a nice place here with y'all, it definitely feels inviting!

I have a lot of labels that can be of various levels of usefulness, but I think if those closest were to to be asked about me "kind" is the first word that would come to mind. I took the "do unto others" thing really seriously, even if I ditched the rest.

I'm queer as the day is long and I partially communicate in memes. Most of my time not gaming, I casually work on my dream game in my head. Just a classic nerd from the 90s.

[–] Whar@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm an asexual tomboy that's studying web dev to give a turn to her career (I worked in OSHA) and I'm loving it!

Doing formal studies and already passed my first year, now I'm going to complete some courses to prepare for the next and last year and hopefully get a job after the internship.

I love strategy and building video games, I like K-pop (well, mostly I like Super Junior), writing, and language learning (currently learning Korean).

I've seen some devs here, can you guide me to some places where I can find projects to build organized by concepts, tools, and/or difficulty?

[–] ffmike@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm a few years out of date due to retirement, but when I was in the game I found the courses from https://wesbos.com/courses incredibly useful. Mostly not free but maybe worth a look anyhow.

Yet another Reddit refugee checking in. I find much of the modern social internet overwhelming and exhausting (looking at you, Discord...) so I was glad to find out about Beehaw. I have entirely too many interests and hobbies, which I tend to rotate through as the whim strikes me. At the moment, it's mostly Gunpla kits, Nintendo Switch (I am the filthiest of casuals), and container gardening (50/50 chance I lose interest before I get a single vegetable).

[–] seedling@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Hi everyone! I didn't actually use Reddit much, but all of a sudden everyone on Mastodon started talking about Lemmy and I thought I'd check it out.

I'll mostly use this account to talk about TTRPG stuff and the creative interests that I have around that, since this is the name I generally go by online when I talk about those things. I've managed to accumulate a lot of neglected hobbies - I'm trying to get better at drawing, I'm very much a self-taught beginner at linocut printing, I've dabbled in bookbinding and want to do more. In terms of TTRPGs I like a bit of everything, especially on the indie side, but lately I've been most interested in Into the Odd style rules light games and solo games.

[–] lwgrs@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Well, I tried introducing myself via kbin and I was going to reply to that introduction since I have now been accepted to beehaw...but I can't find that reply in this thread. So I'll write again!

I work in media (behind the scenes...but I also have a few podcasts on the go and I blog), I have epilepsy, and I like to talk about all sorts of subjects. I'm doing a poor job summarizing myself so I'll just copy/paste from my Mastodon page (with some redactions):

Writer/podcaster; fan of books, podcasts, hockey, baseball, curling & movies. Regional Traffic Manager for [REDACTED]. Views & opinions are my own.

I was also diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 35 (4 years ago, now). Sometimes I talk about that.

[–] case_when@feddit.uk 3 points 2 years ago

Hi all! I'm a scientist and R programmer based in the UK. I like data, and history, and thrillers. I draw pictures. I play board games, especially chess and Go. I'm learning Chinese. Nice to be here!

[–] squid010@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I haven't posted yet, I guess I made an account on a different thing but it looks like I can still post here. Hope that's okay! You all seem so welcoming and kind.

[–] modifier@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago

I made an account on a different thing but it looks like I can still post here. Hope that's okay

Not only is it okay, it appears to be one of the key benefits to federated networks. Welcome fellow newbie.

[–] pumerogo@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Hi! :)

Like so many others, I came from Reddit and I'm gonna stay here. It's nice.

I'm somewhere between 30 and 40, a writer and full time nerd from Germany, I stream and game, I paint and draw and I have two wonderful cats. I like pen & paper rpgs, games in general (except horror), reading, knitting, crocheting, animals, manga, comics, music and listening to the same song on repeat. Also, I probably forgot something.

Thanks for having me here!

[–] megpoid@lemmy.pt 3 points 2 years ago

I'm a 22 year old student and recently a Reddit refugee, still trying to find the right communities in this network. I like linguistics, languages in general, biology and, as a stereotypical nerd, anime, manga, TTRPG and videogames, though I play mostly older games, through emulation.

[–] MeowKittyWow@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Howdy! I'm a mid-30s game developer. In a past life (my 20s) I was an astronomer, but academia sucks so I gtfo'd. I like to ride bikes, but I fell out of the habit over the pandemic; just getting back into it now. I enjoy boomer shooters, and indie games. Gay and trans and loving it.

[–] khalic@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Academia sucks soooo bad, i agree. Had to get out of a dream project because it was too much.

[–] Gigagoblin@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Henlo, I am Gigagoblin! 30's, neurospicy, non-binary, queer. Kinda over all the labels, honestly, just trying to exist. I'm very low-energy & social situations make me spill spaghetti everywhere, but it's easier to connect online! I kinda have huge trouble getting started on things, as well as finishing them & my interests come & go. That said, I'm into writing (poetry & lyrics, mostly), music, movies (especially horror!), cyberpunk, fantasy, spooky things & Digimon. There are manga & anime I enjoy, but I'm not like, obsessed with the mediums. I also enjoy all kinds of gaming, but it's hard to commit when your brain can suddenly decide The Thing is no longer sparking joy.

Essentially, I'm trying my best in the framework I was given. I know I've treated people poorly in the past due to my own pain. It's easy to take it out on others when you're miserable & without hope. Thing is though, I'm also a parent to the most wonderful child & I need to be the kind of person she deserves.

It turns out I'm better off without the people I'd been hanging out with for 15 years, but it also means I'm basically friendless at this point. I don't usually mind the solitude, but sometimes the silence becomes deafening. I guess it's because it's no longer really a choice? Anyway, looking forward to chatting with people here! Apologies if I'm immediately coming across as super depressing, I seem to always be "going through some stuff" & I'd rather paint an honest picture of myself!

[–] davefischer@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Computers, art, music, blah blah blah. My cats think I'm cool.

[–] khalic@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

And I agree with them! Sick beard

[–] distractedcactus@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Hello and howdy to everyone! I'm another of the recently reddit-less, hoping to find a good community here and (figuratively) leave the place a little better than I find it.

[–] khalic@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Ooooh this takes me back to the forum era, with elaborate intro posts, trying to impress every one. Good times…

So I’m Khalic, reddit immigrant and very happy to be part a nice community where respect and tolerance is valued. I’m a cis guy, gay, around 40, living in europe, big video game enthusiast, software developer in biotech, I love to learn, dogs, walks, music, reading and many other things.

See you around here

[–] RadioRat@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

As a neurodivergent person of trans experience, online socializing is critical for safely recharging my social needs. This seems like a good refuge from the plague of corporate interests at the moment. I'm excited to explore and enthuse with everyone :)

Some biographical descriptors:

  • friend of critters, plants, and computers
  • enthusiastic spouse and coparent to 3 hounds
  • radical egalitarian
  • queer guy of trans experience
  • inhabitant of a spicy CNS
  • former biomedical researcher
  • current software engineer
  • aspiring physician
  • cPTSD survivor
  • AR/VR enthusiast
  • armchair philosopher
  • anticapitalist
