Hi everyone! So I just switched to Linux and I am a little unsure of what to play on my laptop.

It's a presumably decent laptop, 16gb of ram and Iris Xe, but I find that it has battery issues trying to play anything fancy like Skyrim.

I'm looking into things like emulation, finally tackling my Itch.io backlog, and bringing out old classics.

I like RPGs and text-based choose your own adventure games, so if you have any recommendations I'd appreciate it!

The Shadowrun games from Harebrained Schemes are some of the best RPGs I've ever played, and they all have native Linux versions. Daggerfall's my favourite, but all three are good.

Do you like ARPGs? Titan Quest is a Greek mythology themed Diablo II clone that has some nice improvements over D2. It's usually pretty cheap on Steam.

Brotato has very modest system requirements and kind has some elements of a micro arpg if you squint. I haven't tried vampire survivors on my low end system yet, but I'm hopeful it has similar system requirements as it has a similar sort game style.

Garry's Mod, Super Tux Kart

Here you can find a bunch free software RPGs: https://libregamewiki.org/Role-playing_games

Also you can install MAME and download like 5000 arcade games from the 70, 80, 90, 2000.

Not exactly text based, but the old sierra style games are still a blast to play. Leisure Suit Larry, Maniac Mansion, Thimbleweed Park. They sure don't need many resources to play.

Mount and blade: Warband

Its on Steam

[–] zilt0id@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Absolutely yes, Warband is tons of fun and there's no other game quite like it. The mods are great too, I've put so many hours into Floris and Prophesy of Pendor.

With the blackout, I see the Gaming community will be assimilated into the LinuxGaming community and I'm here for it.

Tunic is a cute little old-zelda-like. It's 3d, but very simple and has run on my steamdeck better than most things.

Battle for Wesnoth: open source turn based strategy rpg.

[–] jrandomhacker@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

I started playing Wesnoth something like 15 years ago because I was a kid who didn't have access to ways to pay for games online. I've come back to it on-and-off years later - it's a hell of a game for lasting that long.

Dark Souls Remastered should run just fine, one of the greatest games ever. Also make sure you play it with a controller!

Not sure if it’s your cup, but A Short Hike is a very relaxing and wholesome game

While it may not exactly match up with the body of your message, I think this would fit the subject line rather well:

Dwarf Fortress

The stalker series has some of the best gunplay of any low-end system game I've seen.

[–] Jasmin@beehaw.org 2 points 2 years ago

If you like Pokemon like games, take a look at Cassette Beasts! Very charming game!

Cave Story is good / hectic / hard platformer. I might be wrong but I think it was made for Linux first

Also, if you install RetroArch, you can play all the emulated systems.

[–] ChosenUndead15@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Starsector. Sseth has a really good review of the game.

[–] zephyr@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Stronghold Crusaders, or Command and Conquer.

Nostalgic childhood games.

Maybe a game like terraria? It's a native linux game and hella fun!

Or if you want a more chill game maybe something like Gris? It has a gold rating on ProtonDB so should work fine. Gives u the feels too which is a bonus.

[–] Bardak@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 years ago

Not an answer to your question but when you say " I find that it has battery issues trying to play anything fancy like Skyrim" do you mean that the battery drains while plugged in or that you are mainly playing while not plugged in and your battery life is really short.

If it is the former then you might just need to buy a higher wattage power adapter to sustain. The power draw.

caves of qud is quite good, its tile based roguelike.

[–] Swingbiter@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I can't vouch for it running on Linux but that being said, Caves of Qud is really good and has lots of depth.

I've heard something about the dev being a POS or something? Never quite figured out what that was about.

I quite like Mindustry, it's FOSS and on Android too, it is in most repositories/appstores

If you install ScummVM you can play most of the Lucasarts titles. All of these games are top tier (Monkey Island, day of the Tentacle etc) and you would enjoy!
