I was trying to make a really long post (close to 40.000 characters) but it just wouldn't let me. Is there a measure that prevents you from making longer posts somehow? Is the debug mode on? I hear it may cause some issues.

Apparently there's a universal upper limit of 10.000 characters by default.

I hit the limit at somewhere between 8000 and 8500 characters but that post was a table and included several symbols converted to html entity numbers and some non-latin characters.
