No one should expect anything they write online to stay private. It's the number 1 rule of the internet. Don't say anything you wouldn't be willing to defend having said in front of a court.
You are conflating the internet and social media. Stop.
It's a rule from the early days of the net (when social media was IRC, or ICQ). It used to be said that nothing disappeared from the internet.
It's now better to say that nothing you want to disappear truly disappears. Everything else rots
If I meant social media I would've said so.
