Does it not make sense to at least try to recover it to not expose it though or are they just abandoning it entirely and maybe leave it booby trapped if someone follows the cable?

I mean I've seen pictures of Ukrainians setting up punji sticks in abandoned trenches so I'm guessing old dugouts would be trapped as well.
