  • There have long been concerns about the existential risks that might be posed by highly capable AI systems, spanning from loss of control to extinction.
  • Some industry leaders believe AI is close to matching or surpassing human intelligence, though some evidence shows improvements in the technology have slowed recently.
  • While such intelligence might be reached and could pose extreme risks, there are more urgent issues and AI harms that should first be addressed, especially as researchers face more limited resources.

After 13 years of marriage, I re-entered the dating scene as a widow — with zero luck.

Dating apps felt like a graveyard of mismatched intentions. I swiped past shirtless gym guys, bios that read "fluent in sarcasm," and at least one man holding a fish.

So, out of journalistic curiosity — and maybe a bruised ego the size of a small carry-on — I decided to try what everyone else was whispering about: I went on a date with an AI boyfriend.

I used an app called Replika, which lets you design your ideal AI companion. You can customize their name, face, personality and even their job title.

ETH Zurich and EPFL will release a large language model (LLM) developed on public infrastructure. Trained on the “Alps” supercomputer at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), the new LLM marks a milestone in open-source AI and multilingual excellence.

  • In late summer 2025, a publicly developed large language model (LLM) will be released — co-created by researchers at EPFL, ETH Zurich, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS).
  • This LLM will be fully open: This openness is designed to support broad adoption and foster innovation across science, society, and industry.
  • A defining feature of the model is its multilingual fluency in over 1,000 languages.
