I was just wondering if Mullvad is big on advertising their service. Yesterday I saw a city bus with a fat side ad for Mullvad lol. My city isn't too far from Los Angeles but it was just strange to see that. I don't know why but I thought Mullvad was lowkey. Anyone else seen Ads for Mullvad in the wild?

i had trouble setting up a windows vm in virt-manager and having a working internet connection. On virtual box everything just worked but now on virt-manager i figured out that i had to turn on Local Network Sharing on my local host VPN and now the VM works. Is there any negatives or security risks with leaving local networking sharing on my host VPN while i use the host/VM?

What are your experiences on reliability, consistency, speed, range of locations on Mullvad VPN vs other VPNs such as Proton, Nord, ExpressVPN etc …

Do you see any distant advantage in using Mullvad VPN over others.

I've been using Mullvad for several years now, but I've noticed that many websites are increasingly requiring me to turn off my VPN to access their content. Additionally, I've encountered issues where pages just keep loading until I disable the VPN, and then they open right up.

So, why would we use VPN when we don't get access to a bunch of sites?

So I’m kinda new to this but I have an established connection to my server that I can ssh to but while I’m connected if I turn in my VPN the connection gets severed and gives me a “Port 22: Connection Refused error.

Does anyone know any solutions to this issue?

EDIT: Resolved

As the title suggests, I keep encountering this error even when my firewall is turned off. I've already allowed the application through my firewall and set it as a security rule. I've tried reinstalling and restoring, but I don't know what to do next.

Thanks fo the help. I seem to have resolved the issue by updating the DNS, reinstalling version 2025.2, and resetting the firewall. I think main thing was DNS.

Is anyone else experiencing Mullvad's DNS Adblock blocking alot of content you should just be able to see? On X alot of images are just broken because Mullvad doesn't let them load.

Pretty annoying, sometimes switching to another server helps and often it doesn't too.

I have enabled Mullvad on my ASUS router using the OpenVPN profiles. Everything works well, except for Apple Intelligence. Despite my Apple ID and my iPhone's region set to US, I can't use certain Apple Intelligence features.

Features such as Safari webpage summary require connecting to Apple's servers to run the AI, and I can use it without the VPN, but while Mullvad is active, I get the "Unsable to summarize" message, which means there is a problem with the connection.

My Mullvad VPN connection is using a US server, which I did test for WebRTC and DNS leak. Everything appears to be working except for Apple Intelligence and some heavily restricted services such as Perplexity AI.

I hope the problem is only on my side and not yours.

Hi, for the past week or so I’ve realized I can’t connect to U.S. servers. It’ll say “Connection Blocked”. When I change the server to a different U.S. server the same thing occurs. Could this be because my ISP is blacklisting the IPs? Or it could be a bug?

I only have this problem on iOS with the Mullvad App.

My ISP gives me a 2.3Gb/s connection and I'd like to make use of the entire bandwidth from my NAS server. How can I make sure connections are only made to a 10Gb server?

I noticed that Japan (in general) or Hong Kong (for gaming with lower latency) gives the fastest speed (decent enough to get somethings done but feels like dial up speed instead, haha) and lowest latency (which seems to be more important in helping to load things a little faster instead of speed). I noticed that Singapore when selected, seems to be quite slow and sometimes more unstable too.

I wanted to ask from you guys using it on which locations based on your experience that you find it most useful and stable for work and even some decent gaming when you guys are in China. Thanks!

So, I've just downloaded and installed Mullvad on my desktop. No matter which server I seem to use, it does not seem to connect and I get this error message "Unable to start tunnel connection. Please send a problem report." It also stops me from using the internet altogether until I log out. This isn't a problem with my ISP, as it works fine on my laptop. Any advice or suggestions?

tthis would alert users if anything is compromised over at Mullvad and we don't have tto second guess anything. Not only this could provide a more simpler and ttransparent way to communicate with users but also would enable Mullvad itself tto relay a direct message to everyone..,

missing of such warrant canary is prettty strange and this is widely used along with a secure signature to be from from any tampering.

could anyone care to elaborate?! Thank yoou

Yes, I read everything in r/Tailscale and r/mullvadvpn on the topic, still can't figure out a reasonable option...

As a long time Mullvad user, I actually don't want to switch to Mullvad over Tailscale add-on, however there seems no way to make them work alongside each other. But looking at the various options to tackle this, I am still wondering if I have all the assumptions right.

1.) Tailscale alongside Mullvad on same machine/ OS (Windows, Linux, Android)

  • Ideal solution
  • Apparently not possible

2.) Tailscale with Mullvad configured on Router

  • Use Tailscale as is
  • Should work without issues
  • Loses all the flexibility of the Mullvad VPN client, like e.g. quickly switching to another server. Also split tunneling is absolutely crucial for apps or websites which nowadays simply don't work with active VPN connections.
  • Loses all the bells and whistles of the Mullvad VPN client (quantum-resistance, DAITA, kill switch etc.)

3.) Tailscale with Mullvad configured on e.g. a Gluetun docker on NAS

  • Use Tailscale with Gluetun docker as exit node
  • Should work without issues
  • Loses all the flexibility of the Mullvad VPN client, like e.g. quickly switching to another server. Also split tunneling is absolutely crucial for apps or websites which nowadays simply don't work with active VPN connections.
  • Loses all the bells and whistles of the Mullvad VPN client (quantum-resistance, DAITA, kill switch etc.)

4.) Tailscale with Mullvad client running on e.g. Linux VM on NAS

  • Use Tailscale with Linux VM as exit node
  • Should work without issues
  • Somewhat easier to maintain the flexibility/ bells and whistles of the Mullvad client over the VM
  • VM would have to be running 24/7...

5.) Tailscale with Mullvad add-on

  • Use Tailscale with Mullvad exit nodes
  • Loses all the flexibility of the Mullvad VPN client, like e.g. quickly switching to another server. Also split tunneling is absolutely crucial for apps or websites which nowadays simply don't work with active VPN connections.
  • Loses all the bells and whistles of the Mullvad VPN client (quantum-resistance, DAITA, kill switch etc.)
  • Somewhat losing anonymity in the process

6.) Forget Tailscale

  • Keep enjoying the full experience of the Mullvad client...

These are the reasonable options I can think of, but are the assumptions for these options correct? If I can't go without the mentioned features of the Mullvad client, I am left with option 4) or 6)?

Also, which compromise did you end up going for? Especially in case of options 2), 3) or 5) how do you deal with apps or websites which need to be excluded from the VPN tunnel?

Any input much appreciated!

I've purchased my subscription for the first time and all my other devices work with the vpn except my Windows 11 PC, when I turn on the connection, I've no internet access at all.

I've followed this guide, but the issue is still persisting,

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/split-tunneling-on-macos

Split tunneling was introduced earlier this year to the macOS app. The 2025.2 release irons out some issues that remained, and the feature is now considered stable on all desktop platforms.

Split tunneling allows you to exclude select apps from the VPN, for example if you need to use services that do not work well with VPNs. Read more here: Split tunneling with the Mullvad app (https[://]mullvad[.]net/help/split-tunneling-with-the-mullvad-app) .

The initial release for macOS was included in version 2024.4 of the app. This new release includes fixes for issues with packet loss, improved user experience for handling permissions, and ensures that the feature does not affect network traffic when disabled.

How to use it

You can find the feature under Settings > Split tunneling. It can also be configured using the command-line interface: run mullvad split-tunnel for more information.

When using the feature for the first time, you may be prompted to enable full-disk access for the app. This permission allows the Mullvad daemon to track processes and ensure that only selected apps bypass the VPN tunnel.

Limitations

Although it supports many common uses, there are several caveats. Some are listed below.

Cannot exclude Safari (and WebKit)

WebKit renders pages in processes that are not forked from the browser process. We currently cannot determine that such traffic should be excluded, given that we only exclude processes and their subprocesses. This limitation affects interprocess communication in general.

You can make sure that the browser is excluded by visiting our connection check page (https[://]mullvad[.]net/check), and noting that it displays a red warning with the text “Not using Mullvad VPN”.

Performance

Split tunneling relies on tunneling all traffic through an additional tunnel interface, so there is a significant overhead, for both excluded apps and VPN traffic. All apps will likely have slower connectivity when split tunneling is enabled.

OS version

Split tunneling is only available on macOS 13 and above.

Tunnel lifetime

Sometimes connections break when toggling split tunneling or disconnecting from the VPN. This is because connections are tied to the lifetime of the tunnel interface. For many applications, this does not matter, but it may cause interruptions.

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/quantum-resistant-tunnels-are-now-the-default-on-desktop

The 2025.2 desktop release enables quantum-resistant WireGuard tunnels by default on Windows. This means that it’s now enabled by default on all desktop platforms.

You should now see the “Quantum resistance” feature indicator while connected, unless you have explicitly disabled Quantum-resistant tunnels.

If it is not already enabled, you can navigate to Settings → VPN settings → WireGuard settings → Quantum-resistant tunnel. The setting should be set to either Automatic or On.

Mobile platforms

We hope to enable this by default on iOS and Android in the future, once we are sure that it works well.

Quantum-resistant tunnels

A regular WireGuard VPN tunnel has no known weaknesses today, but an attacker could potentially record encrypted traffic and in the future use a stronger quantum computer to decrypt it.

The feature prevents such a future attack using post-quantum secure key encapsulation mechanisms for exchanging a pre-shared key for WireGuard. The algorithms currently used are Classic McEliece and ML-KEM.

With this new app release we switched to the NIST standard ML-KEM from the earlier Kyber standard, but this is essentially a minor revision of that standard.
