My ISP gives me a 2.3Gb/s connection and I'd like to make use of the entire bandwidth from my NAS server. How can I make sure connections are only made to a 10Gb server?

I noticed that Japan (in general) or Hong Kong (for gaming with lower latency) gives the fastest speed (decent enough to get somethings done but feels like dial up speed instead, haha) and lowest latency (which seems to be more important in helping to load things a little faster instead of speed). I noticed that Singapore when selected, seems to be quite slow and sometimes more unstable too.

I wanted to ask from you guys using it on which locations based on your experience that you find it most useful and stable for work and even some decent gaming when you guys are in China. Thanks!

So, I've just downloaded and installed Mullvad on my desktop. No matter which server I seem to use, it does not seem to connect and I get this error message "Unable to start tunnel connection. Please send a problem report." It also stops me from using the internet altogether until I log out. This isn't a problem with my ISP, as it works fine on my laptop. Any advice or suggestions?

tthis would alert users if anything is compromised over at Mullvad and we don't have tto second guess anything. Not only this could provide a more simpler and ttransparent way to communicate with users but also would enable Mullvad itself tto relay a direct message to everyone..,

missing of such warrant canary is prettty strange and this is widely used along with a secure signature to be from from any tampering.

could anyone care to elaborate?! Thank yoou

Yes, I read everything in r/Tailscale and r/mullvadvpn on the topic, still can't figure out a reasonable option...

As a long time Mullvad user, I actually don't want to switch to Mullvad over Tailscale add-on, however there seems no way to make them work alongside each other. But looking at the various options to tackle this, I am still wondering if I have all the assumptions right.

1.) Tailscale alongside Mullvad on same machine/ OS (Windows, Linux, Android)

  • Ideal solution
  • Apparently not possible

2.) Tailscale with Mullvad configured on Router

  • Use Tailscale as is
  • Should work without issues
  • Loses all the flexibility of the Mullvad VPN client, like e.g. quickly switching to another server. Also split tunneling is absolutely crucial for apps or websites which nowadays simply don't work with active VPN connections.
  • Loses all the bells and whistles of the Mullvad VPN client (quantum-resistance, DAITA, kill switch etc.)

3.) Tailscale with Mullvad configured on e.g. a Gluetun docker on NAS

  • Use Tailscale with Gluetun docker as exit node
  • Should work without issues
  • Loses all the flexibility of the Mullvad VPN client, like e.g. quickly switching to another server. Also split tunneling is absolutely crucial for apps or websites which nowadays simply don't work with active VPN connections.
  • Loses all the bells and whistles of the Mullvad VPN client (quantum-resistance, DAITA, kill switch etc.)

4.) Tailscale with Mullvad client running on e.g. Linux VM on NAS

  • Use Tailscale with Linux VM as exit node
  • Should work without issues
  • Somewhat easier to maintain the flexibility/ bells and whistles of the Mullvad client over the VM
  • VM would have to be running 24/7...

5.) Tailscale with Mullvad add-on

  • Use Tailscale with Mullvad exit nodes
  • Loses all the flexibility of the Mullvad VPN client, like e.g. quickly switching to another server. Also split tunneling is absolutely crucial for apps or websites which nowadays simply don't work with active VPN connections.
  • Loses all the bells and whistles of the Mullvad VPN client (quantum-resistance, DAITA, kill switch etc.)
  • Somewhat losing anonymity in the process

6.) Forget Tailscale

  • Keep enjoying the full experience of the Mullvad client...

These are the reasonable options I can think of, but are the assumptions for these options correct? If I can't go without the mentioned features of the Mullvad client, I am left with option 4) or 6)?

Also, which compromise did you end up going for? Especially in case of options 2), 3) or 5) how do you deal with apps or websites which need to be excluded from the VPN tunnel?

Any input much appreciated!

I've purchased my subscription for the first time and all my other devices work with the vpn except my Windows 11 PC, when I turn on the connection, I've no internet access at all.

I've followed this guide, but the issue is still persisting,

Any help would be appreciated!

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/split-tunneling-on-macos

Split tunneling was introduced earlier this year to the macOS app. The 2025.2 release irons out some issues that remained, and the feature is now considered stable on all desktop platforms.

Split tunneling allows you to exclude select apps from the VPN, for example if you need to use services that do not work well with VPNs. Read more here: Split tunneling with the Mullvad app (https[://]mullvad[.]net/help/split-tunneling-with-the-mullvad-app) .

The initial release for macOS was included in version 2024.4 of the app. This new release includes fixes for issues with packet loss, improved user experience for handling permissions, and ensures that the feature does not affect network traffic when disabled.

How to use it

You can find the feature under Settings > Split tunneling. It can also be configured using the command-line interface: run mullvad split-tunnel for more information.

When using the feature for the first time, you may be prompted to enable full-disk access for the app. This permission allows the Mullvad daemon to track processes and ensure that only selected apps bypass the VPN tunnel.

Limitations

Although it supports many common uses, there are several caveats. Some are listed below.

Cannot exclude Safari (and WebKit)

WebKit renders pages in processes that are not forked from the browser process. We currently cannot determine that such traffic should be excluded, given that we only exclude processes and their subprocesses. This limitation affects interprocess communication in general.

You can make sure that the browser is excluded by visiting our connection check page (https[://]mullvad[.]net/check), and noting that it displays a red warning with the text “Not using Mullvad VPN”.

Performance

Split tunneling relies on tunneling all traffic through an additional tunnel interface, so there is a significant overhead, for both excluded apps and VPN traffic. All apps will likely have slower connectivity when split tunneling is enabled.

OS version

Split tunneling is only available on macOS 13 and above.

Tunnel lifetime

Sometimes connections break when toggling split tunneling or disconnecting from the VPN. This is because connections are tied to the lifetime of the tunnel interface. For many applications, this does not matter, but it may cause interruptions.

Link: https[://]mullvad[.]net/en/blog/quantum-resistant-tunnels-are-now-the-default-on-desktop

The 2025.2 desktop release enables quantum-resistant WireGuard tunnels by default on Windows. This means that it’s now enabled by default on all desktop platforms.

You should now see the “Quantum resistance” feature indicator while connected, unless you have explicitly disabled Quantum-resistant tunnels.

If it is not already enabled, you can navigate to Settings → VPN settings → WireGuard settings → Quantum-resistant tunnel. The setting should be set to either Automatic or On.

Mobile platforms

We hope to enable this by default on iOS and Android in the future, once we are sure that it works well.

Quantum-resistant tunnels

A regular WireGuard VPN tunnel has no known weaknesses today, but an attacker could potentially record encrypted traffic and in the future use a stronger quantum computer to decrypt it.

The feature prevents such a future attack using post-quantum secure key encapsulation mechanisms for exchanging a pre-shared key for WireGuard. The algorithms currently used are Classic McEliece and ML-KEM.

With this new app release we switched to the NIST standard ML-KEM from the earlier Kyber standard, but this is essentially a minor revision of that standard.

I tried using Mullvad Browser and accidentally set "network.dns.blockDotOnion" to true in about:config. For some reason, this caused me to lose my internet connection. I quickly changed the setting back to its original value, but I still couldn't connect to the internet. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the browser, but my settings seem to be getting imported somehow, and I'm still unable to connect. How can I reset the browser to its default settings?

I'm running Mullvad using wireguard (wg-quick) on a Raspberry Pi, and it has been working great for the past several years. This morning around 6 hours ago, for no apparent reason, all my outgoing and incoming stuff on Homeassistant stopped working, that's how I noticed something was wrong. Rebooted the Pi but to no avail. Trying to ping just gives me "temporary failure in name resolution".

Doing "wg-quick down mullvad" solves all connection issues but obviously this is not what I want.

I have tried generating new keys and config files but no luck.

Pinging the DNS server 10.64.0.1 from my non-mullvad-connected PC times out. So my best guess is the DNS server went offline this morning, but there is no info about that on Mullvad's server status page.

Any suggestions on workaround? Can I just replace the IP address in the config file with 194.242.2.2 (mullvad public DNS)?

As the title says, recently using a split tunneled instance of firefox has been terrible.

Websites take 30 seconds (I'm truly not exaggerating here) to load. I've confirmed that split tunneling is working correctly, and my download speeds remain normal.

I'm guessing it's a dns issue maybe? Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?

Since the last update, the mullvad logo is no longer displayed at the top of the menu bar in the brave browser, but it is still displayed on the desktop, that's annoying, fix the problem, thanks. While we're at it, it's also annoying that you can't fix mullvad in the dock, but instead you have to go to the launchpad, which is also annoying, please fix it, thanks.

I am on Fedora Linux and have been having some connection issues with mullvad over the past 2-3 days. Yesterday I had to disconnect and quit the program several times before I was able to connect to a location.

Today I have the same experience but it is not connecting even after waiting 30+ minutes and restarting my entire computer.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Please let me know what additional information is needed

Other companies claim that they protect against the leak of real IP through WebRTC . They promise that I can still use WebRTC and that I will be protected from any leakage at the same time. This applies to all of my devices (Android, Windows)

My subscription is running out though.

All I could find about how Mullvad handels WebRTC is the article on their Website.

It doesn't look like Mullvad is protecting me from leaking my external/public IP. They just suggest to turn it off? Well WebRTC isn't just used in browsers it is also used by many apps like facebook messanger and instagram.

Also other VPN companies promise that they protect against WebRTC leaks through other protections. Quote from a diffrent provider regarding WebRTC : "A good VPN app will use firewall rules and other platform-specific techniques to ensure your real IP address can’t be exposed by WebRTC."

If Mullvad can't clear the air on this I might choose a different provider. Their website is either missing information, or (the worst case) they don't protect against WebRTC leaks.

I love the general fight Mullvad puts up for privacy! At the same time I don't want to choose a VPN provider that doesn't do whatever they can to prevent any type of IP leaks.

Lately, when I connect to Switzerland or Sweden, I get IP addresses that geolocate to Washington, DC, London, and Ukraine.

What is actually going on? Has Sweden been conquering the world?

Is there a Swedish Empire happening that we don't know about?

Hi, i generally have a pretty bad internet connection that frequently disconnects and reconnects. I figured this is fine since even if the vpn disconnects, surely the internet isnt doing anything since its also disconnected right?

Could this a privacy risk even when using mullvad vpn? What if I enable kill switch?

So I recently got Mullvad on my Mac. Installed great and connected. I went to go do a check per recommendation of another sub (I'll link the two sites I used below). One of them (the browser leak site) tells my IP address is the location I've selected on the app and the other one says 'I'm not using the Mullvad VPN'. I don't know which site to trust. I want to be sure my IP address isn't being leaked. Any input is helpful, thanks. Can include pics if needed.

Hello everyone, I'm using Mullvad now for around 2 years, really happy with it, but would for a change to be more anonymously, pay with cash now and send a letter a few days before Christmas and now start wondering how long it usually takes, until the letter arrives and getting processed to the account. For me, sending from Germany should take around a week, but with Christmas between maybe a bit longer. Through my time runs out in a few days, am I just impatient or could the letter be "lost"? How long did it took for you or did it also happened to not arrive at all?

Are there known good nodes people can suggest I use or something? I'm on east coast US. I have tried just about every US based server but the issues I listed in the title always pop up. I've found a few European based servers that avoid the "blocked everywhere/constant captchas" issue but the speeds are terrible.

Any suggestions? Close to just trying to get a refund for my year I purchased and trying somebody else.

Hey all!

Hope you're doing well, I'm writing here as a desperate measure as I've tried literally everything under the sun but it's still not fixed the problem.

Currently my laptop is able to connect to a wifi however, does not connect to internet, and quickly disconnects itself. It shows "secured/connected, can't connect to internet". I had been having this problem for the past week and "fixed it" somehow after messing around with all settings and unblocking VPN killswitch. However TODAY it decided to die on me again and i have no idea how else to fix it. I somehow fixed it with a combination of the things below a few days ago but its gone back to not working now.

Listing the things i have tried below:

  • Double checked and wifi is working just fine, it works on my other devices
  • Tried the list of command prompt that fixes wifi connections, it involves winstock, ipconfig dns, release/renew, firewall
  • Unblocking killswitch or disconnecting VPN
  • Uninstalling AND reinstalling VPN (I no longer need VPN so it was always at "disconnected status", but somehow still activated killswitch)
  • Tried logging into VPN but says "api is blocked by firewall", disabled all firewall, problem persists.
  • Uninstall and reinstalled network adaptor, updating to latest
  • performed all updates on laptop
  • Tried both changing DNS address to automatic AND manual under 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
  • Tried restarting
  • Tried hotspot, connects but does not work
  • Tried changing GHZ preferences and other options under network
  • To my memory, i do not have "always require VPN" turned on, even if so, it doesnt make sense as it was literally working last night after i fixed it.

Please can someone help and give some pointers here? 😭 I am happy to chat in DMs too, thank you appreciate you sll 😭
