Some of my classmates had activated their cameras. I scrolled through the little windows, noting the alarmed faces, downcast in cold laptop light. There were dozens of us on the call, including a geophysicist, an actor, a retired financial adviser and a civil engineer. We all looked worried, and rightly so. The issue formerly known as climate change was now a polycrisis called climate collapse. H1N1 was busily jumping from birds to cows to people. And with each passing day, as Donald Trump went about gleefully dismantling state capacity, the promise of a competent government response to the next hurricane, wildfire, flood, pandemic, drought, mudslide, heatwave, financial meltdown, hailstorm or other calamity receded further from view.

I still find it staggering and heart-rending that we blew this so badly,”

I can only agree with that

Indeed and the US had lumped in nations who they would have previously called friends and fucked them as well.

Short term lots of nations will feel some.pain, longher term of China plays it's cards right, the US continues it's slide into irrelevance.

As an Australian i hope we pivot to Europe and build stronger relationships there but we have a long tradition of our tongue being stuck firmly up the arsehole of the US.

Austraia and the UK have similar laws to allow border police to search your electronic devices. In Australia they can clone your phone and keep a copy for as long as they want.

What's bemusing to me is to read some local Aussie posters saying how fascist America has become, when Australia does the same and has for over a decade.

Farmers across the United States say they could face financial ruin – unless there is a huge taxpayer-funded bail out to compensate for losses generated by Donald Trump’s sweeping cuts and chaotic tariffs.

Need that sweet, sweet socalism. Last time Trump chipped in some few billion tax dollars to help out the "welfare queen" farmers, I assume they think he will again as they go cap in hand amd tug thier forelock to m'lord ?

Lead author Professor Peng Bi said the impact of climate change on mental health was “only going to get worse” without action.

“From mild distress to serious conditions like schizophrenia, rising temperatures are making things harder for millions,” he said.

High temperatures, according to the report, contributed to an annual loss of 8,459 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) between 2003 and 2018.

A new study led by a team at the University of Adelaide’s School of Public Health has found the burden of mental and behavioural disorders could increase by almost 50 per cent by 2050.

A reminder to myself as yet anothwr reason why I moved to Northern Tassie from FNQ (via Northern NSW)

new study published in the Journal of Remote Sensing has revealed that current satellite systems underestimate total CO₂ emissions from U.S. thermal power plants by 70% (±12%).

WTF ? How to "reduce" emissions, don't count some 70% of your coal power plant emissions, job done /s

Mallon warns some Australian neighbourhoods could become what he calls “climate ghettos”.

“There are certain areas where you will start to see a negative spiral,” he says.

One of the major obstacles preventing reform is that no-one is willing to admit there’s a problem, according to Mallon.

He says because banks and insurance companies have exposure in these sub-prime climate markets, it’s not in their interests to raise the alarm.

We're on the eve of destruction....

Bike riders say they were given no notice about shutdown and have not been told when route will reopen, leaving many facing long detours or choosing to drive

More than a month later, at the time of writing, they remain shut without a date of reopening and the council is encouraging pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders to “consider” using another bridge more than 2km away by bike.

What a dick move :(

The number of billion-dollar disasters in the U.S. is increasing. A recent report says FEMA made a disaster declaration somewhere in the U.S. every four days, on average, in 2024

Unmanaged abandonment I guess ?

It's an absolute waste of taxpayer dollars if the Tasmanian government is going to pour grants into these grassroots bush regeneration projects but fails to tackle the invasive species that are trashing, tramping and degrading the parks in the first place," she said.

.Pet dogs have ‘extensive and multifarious’ impact on environment, new research finds

An Australian review of existing studies has argued that “the environmental impact of owned dogs is far greater, more insidious, and more concerning than is generally recognised”.

The carbon footprint of pets is also significant. A 2020 study found the dry pet food industry had an environmental footprint of around twice the land area of the UK, with greenhouse gas emissions – 56 to 151 Mt CO2 – equivalent to the 60th highest-emitting country.

Let alone in Austrailia the enormous death rate from koalas from dogs.

Most parliamentarians might be surprised to learn it, but Australians care about nature.

What, no they don't!

Late last year, the not-for-profit Biodiversity Council commissioned a survey

Ahhh well that's about the extent of the caring then, telling somone over the phone.

I find these articles disturbing for their lack of honesty and insight.

Carbon emisions, Urban sprawl and cars etc solutions? Significant chanhes in lifestyles that won't be tolerated. Voters show us all the time they dont care about nature

I find this remarkable (and wonderfully recreshing) , in Australia we seemingly want to buy expensive housing to get on the grift.

As John Howard said, he was never approached by anyone about making housing more affordable, as well as Plibersek as Housing Minister in the Rudd government,.wbere before that election saying first home owners gramts where a bad idea as all they did was raise house prices, gets elected to government and increases the first home owners grant as her first task.
