Introductie

Sittard (Limburgs: Zitterd) is een stad in Nederlands-Limburg, in het overgangsgebied tussen Midden-Limburg en het Zuid-Limburgse heuvelland. Het is een van de oudste plaatsen in Nederland en de op een na oudste stad (een plaats die ooit stadsrechten had) van Limburg, na Maastricht.

Sittard vormt sinds 2001 tezamen met het zuidwestelijk aangrenzende, in de voormalige Westelijke Mijnstreek gelegen gemeente Geleen en de gemeente Born, de gemeente Sittard-Geleen. Door deze fusie is de gemeente Sittard-Geleen qua inwonertal (ongeveer 92.177) de derde van de provincie geworden.
