You crossed the streams... never cross the streams!

[–] NoSpotOfGround@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago

Came here to comment on that. Why are the last two lines crossed? So unnecessary.

Not necessarily. There's definitely a very slim chance we'll survive.

This sounds super cool. But gonna need a source on it.

That is super cool! I had no idea!

“Child, we’re Angolan. We will never have anything to do with those vile reticulateds!”

“If I ever catch you anywhere near those filthy angolans, I’ll feed you to the lions myself!”

NB: I have no idea if Giraffes are as bigoted about themselves as idiot humans can be, I’m just expressing my frustration that we still are.

Did you just call us reticulatards?

Does the sun hit differently in these areas?

I would think since africa is such a giant continent they are genetically distinct herds that roam those territories and have little intermingling happening due to distance or geography. So over time they developed distinct patterns from mutation and lack of intermingling with other patterns, and since they apparently all fulfill the same function "well enough" there is no evolutionary pressure to correct it.

Ahh, this is what giraffes are racist to each other about

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would guess they would have evolved to fit the vegetation in their area. Though I’m not sure that is what this type of camouflage is actually for. (Has more to do with blending in with the herd than the vegetation. )

maybe it has to do with predator specialization, then?
