Still avoids Scunthorpe. There is no good reason to visit Scunthorpe.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I think that's the Tom Scott video where I learned about Penistone

[–] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I’ve only learned the name “Scunthorpe” recently because I was reading up on a band I really like from there. I remember noting that it was about the ugliest name for a town I could think of that doesn’t actually contain any recognizable words… but I would assume it’s a perfectly lovely place regardless of that

[–] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Doesn’t actually contain any recognizable words

I take it you’ve not heard of the Scunthorpe problem?

[–] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Actually I haven’t, fascinating! Somehow I didn’t even notice that word in there, I was just thinking about how it sounded like ‘scum’ lol

"I tried out that shit barber shop, not bad!"

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 30 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

The best part about Shitterton is that the name comes from "sewer town." Not another language, no alternate meaning, it is just as it sounds in modern English.

[–] DJDarren@thelemmy.club 9 points 3 months ago

The sign for Shitterton had to be carved out of a big chunk of local stone, because the normal metal ones kept getting nicked. Obviously.

Nothing beats, Fucking, Austria:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugging,_Upper_Austria

"Fugging (German: [ˈfʊkɪŋ] ⓘ), spelled Fucking until 2021, is an Austrian village (...)

Augustina Lindlbauer, the manager of an area guesthouse, said that the area had lakes, forests, and vistas worth visiting, but there was an "obsession with Fucking", and she had to explain to a British tourist "that there were no Fucking postcards".

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

I refuse to spell it any other way than Fucking.

No Bell End or Wetwang?

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

If you want a shorter trip you can go from Blue Ball to Paradise. The road goes through Intercourse.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You missed out Minge Lane.

[–] roscoe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I've always liked that one. On a scale of fanny to gash, how impolite is it considered over there?

[–] FozzyOsbourne@lemm.ee 2 points 3 months ago

It was very popular in the mid-2000s but I don't think I've heard anyone use it since then. I'd say somewhere in the middle.

[–] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

Lots of side trips available to places such as Upper and Lower Dicker (East Sussex), Scratchy Bottom (Dorset) and Minge Lane (Worcestershire).

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I am equally impressed that the journey is over 1k miles, considering the entire island is about 600 miles top to bottom. An extra 400 miles of no straight roads.

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I heard the phrase, "as the bird flies" recently in reference to the 600 miles type of measurement and thought that was neat

[–] FozzyOsbourne@lemm.ee 3 points 3 months ago

"As the crow flies" is a pretty common expression on this very isle

[–] 4oreman@lemy.lol 11 points 3 months ago

Isle of man ; lol

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

They weren't exactly shy about what places were for in the middle ages. This is where the brothels used to be.

Also, Shitterton is literally called that because it was downstream from where all the sewage was flowing.

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 months ago

Hahaha, such silly names!

Who would even want to live in a town called Glasgow?

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

I always thought Twatt and Shitterton were so close to each other... Shows what I know

[–] sit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 months ago

Lmaoo Glasgow

[–] Hikermick@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Here in Ohio you can go from Dayton to Marion in four hours but it's a commitment

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 4 points 3 months ago

I'm from Engagement Ohio. It's right between Dayton and Marion

[–] bruhduh@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Hey Assman!

[–] francisfordpoopola@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (5 children)

Texas checking in... We don't have as good of names like that but we have cities like Paris, Athens, and Odessa, TX. I think there are maybe 20 to 25 international city names that would make a fascinating road trip and probably be over 1K miles/1600 Km.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

you can claim you traveled to all those cities and hope people don't have a follow-up question

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

You can go see the Parthenon (full scale) and a Pyramid (not accurate) in Tennessee

There are some random things around the U.S. that often get overlooked.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

How are you not mentioning that you can buy guns at the pyramid?

That's a very important detail.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Are there any respectable places in Tennessee that you can't buy both beer and guns? I mean hell, Walmart is supposed to be the low bar. If you can get a 12 pack, a shot gun and a few hundred shells and walk out without needing anything but an ID showing your 18, well this ain't America

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

Whoa whoa whoa, there's beer involved, your ID better say you're 21.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

To be fair, the same is true for handguns and firearm receivers.

So not only do you guys not have a sense of humor, you also aren't even creative enough to come up with your own names?

Pathetic

I just confirmed that all of those places are real as depicted

[–] joel_feila@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

So the uk has a 1000 km taint 🤔

[–] uhhhehhh@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Gonna have to check out slutshole lane

[–] Gort@lemm.ee 3 points 3 months ago

Should have made a detour to Pratt's Bottom.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Ooh, I should be near a few of these in a couple weeks. Might as well make the stop.

[–] pi3r8@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago
