President Donald Trump says he has ordered the justice department to produce additional documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

"Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval," he said.

It's unclear if Trump is authorising the public release of these documents. Such action would typically require court approval.

Yeah Bondi, slap together some more doctored BS to tell whatever story you need to tell. Maybe more "raw unedited footage" pasted together and missing 3 minutes.

I don't see how it could possibly help him. It's just going to keep the story in the media, longer it stays in the news cycle the bigger it snowballs.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 2 points 21 hours ago

More likely let it stay in the media and give them boring shit until something else catches peoples attention.

[–] techt@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Distraction from something worse, probably.

[–] scintilla@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This distraction rhetoric is fucking stupid. They are doing a lot of bad things at the same time so you cant focus on all of it at once. they don't care what you're focusing on just that not everyone is focused on the same things so a group is harder to form. It's why we (the left) need to keep hitting on the list. It's clearly a weak point and there is blood in the water so we need to keep pushing. There are some MAGA that are waking up because of this.

[–] techt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I see your point, but it still feels like press bait to me. Is there any way what gets released can be verified to be authentic? I have seen one or two MAGA supporters speaking out over it, but I have serious doubts they won't return after a trivial capitulation like this. What I'd love to see is engagement from people who didn't vote, I want to see protest crowds getting bigger. I understand your frustration, but I think it's valid to try to absorb the other news as well.

[–] scintilla@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't disagree with trying to absorb other things that wasn't what was intended sorry if it came off that way.

I think I a piece piece of evidence is that the right wing news orgs are still talking about it after they were told to stop. Their own audiences turned against them enough that they have to keep talking about it. I forget who said it but one said that they trust the people in the white house to take care of it and his own comments dragged him for it.

There are also some people I know personally that have genuinely been shook by this.

[–] techt@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Thanks for explaining! That's very encouraging.

Anyone that already hates Trump isn't distracted by this. If anything it's only making people that voted for him become more suspicious of him and take criticism of him more seriously.

This isn't a distraction. This is Trump absolutely failing to control the narrative with his base for the first real time.

Because even MAGA voters are ok with burning down the government if it's true that our two party system and the billionaires they work for are literally protecting pedophiles. Which I don't think many people doubt at this point.

MAGA just had the delusions that somehow the sex pest billionaire was on their side.

I see what you mean, and I hope you're right.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What's worse than the President of the world's most influential nation being part of a child sex trafficking scheme? Other than nuclear war, which would be pretty hard to distract people from.

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

The deportation of democrats and lefties and undesirables and the deaths of those cut off medicaid/care and starving kids, oh, yeah, and the nuclear war.

Back of the mind worry/conspiracy theory:

You really thing trump suddenly changed his mind about putin after 40 years? Trump arms Ukraine, Putin gets mad, nukes a blue state trump fulfills his promise "blue states will disappear from the map", Q gets their great solar flash of 2025, and welcome to hell.

[–] techt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I guess it doesn't really need to be something worse -- they have full control over the narrative, and the WH clearly won't actually release anything meaningful, so keeping it in the news is a huge attention magnet with practically no downside. Maybe an extra week of all other news getting buried is worth it. Maybe it's a favor to that CEO who got caught cheating at a Coldplay concert. I get the impression that when he does something weirdly out-of-character it's a misdirection, so I'll look at page two of the news for awhile.
