Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Here are a couple of videos and video essays I've watched and enjoyed a lot in the past for numerous soulslikes. I can definitely recommend any of them and have sorted them by game. The length can vary a lot, so many of them are probably videos you'd wanna watch/listen to over the span of a couple of days. I've had loads of fun with them and recommend checking out the respective channels for sure.

As you might have guessed, I have a soft spot for Bloodborne and Lies of P wherein my personal standouts would be "Visceral Feminity" - a video essay that deals with Bloodborne's imagery and its parallelity to the female experience - and "How Lies of P Twists Pinocchio's Origins" - a video essay that explores the similarities between the original Pinocchio novel and Lies of P and shows how its lore and world building are translated for the game.

Do feel free to comment your favourite video essays about any of the soulslikes you can think of and are passionate about. I'll add it to the post's body so people have a nice comprehensive list to check out in the future. I'll also pin the post for a couple of weeks for visibility.

Enjoy :)

Can we not? He barely contributed anything to the story. Plus who even cares about video game movies?

Speaking to IGN, Martin said he "can't say too much about it," but did indeed confirm that there is "some talk about about making a movie out of Elden Ring."

In Hollywood, nothing is certain, so no one should get their hopes up to see an Elden Ring movie soon, or ever. Martin acknowledged this, saying "we'll see" if the movie "comes to pass." Even if an Elden Ring movie does materialize, Martin said he's not sure what the extent of his involvement could be. "I don't know," he said, before going on to acknowledge that he's "a few years behind" on his long-awaited Winds of Winter. "So that limits the amount of things that I can do," he said.

Before this, From Software's own Hidetaka Miyazaki said there is "some interest" in an Elden Ring movie, but the team wants to be careful about finding the right partner for it.

Throughout the game's lies and on the portrait, P's nose doesn't grow during the game. Apparently, though, your nose grows longer on your shadow when light is cast on your model by the main stargazer in Hotel Krat. Interesting find, indeed

FromSoftware is one of the best video game developers around, and Sony missed out on their success because of a certain bad decision.

Anything new you're picking up? A comfort game you want to start another playthrough of? Any challenging bosses?

I just got to Fountainhead Palace in Sekiro after a long session with Owl Father which I'm looking forward to. And hopefully my copy of Lies of P will be getting here today or tomorrow which I'll likely start another playthrough of.

Also, would you guys like this to be a weekly thing to ask on Fridays? We currently don't have any reoccurring meta posts here - maybe this would be a good start and a conversation starter.

Have a good one!

Dear citizens of Krat, This is Jiwon Choi, the Director of Lies of P.

Cross the bounds of time and join in my excitement as we take you back to the beginning of the Lies of P storyline. I am sure you’ll agree that the long journey to bring you this news was well worth it! The first gameplay trailer for Lies of P: Overture was just unveiled at the PlayStation State of Play, filled with incredible revelations. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we did making it. This was a historic debut for us, and it was especially gratifying to share this cinematic moment with fans, veterans of soulslike games, and newcomers alike.

As you might have guessed from the title, Lies of P: Overture takes you back in time to uncover the hidden stories of Krat. Do you remember the moment when you, as Geppetto’s most ambitious masterwork, woke up in the middle of the great Puppet Frenzy, a massacre that devastated the entire city around you? Now, you will venture back in time to experience the harrowing journey that birthed that fateful moment. Through Lies of P: Overture, we aimed to fully refine, forge, and complete the story as we originally envisioned it.

There’s a term in movie making known as a “director’s cut.” This version differs from an initial theatrical release and usually includes additional footage the filmmaker believes perfects the work. With Lies of P: Overture, I wonder if we subconsciously aimed to create a “developer’s cut” of Lies of P.

Our production crew had so many stories and features they were eager to explore. We were constantly brainstorming until the very end. Figuring out how to weave these elements into Lies of P: Overture was a major challenge for me as the director. With this new retrospective, we’re committed to ensuring that the love and support we received for Lies of P is honored and, at the same time, telling the story we’ve always wanted to share. Rest assured, we’ll continue giving it our all until the very end.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for all the feedback and insight we received from our Citizens of Krat since the launch of Lies of P. Your invaluable feedback significantly aided our developers in perfecting Lies of P and its dramatic prequel, coming this summer.

Our fans, beloved community of gamers, you complete us. Join our team in concluding the remarkable story arc of Lies of P.

Thank you, always. Jiwon Choi
