At its foot, Polish soldiers, hooded and carrying machine guns, patrol the border -- a flashpoint between Warsaw and Minsk whom Poland had blamed for orchestrating the influx of migrants. "Migration is artificially directed here," said Michal Bura, a spokesman for the Podlasie region border guards, joining the patrol in his four-wheel drive. "The Belarusian services help the migrants, transport them from one place to another, and equip them with tools they need to cross this barrier, such as pliers, hacksaws, and ladders," he added.

This month, the five-metre-high (16-foot) metal barrier along the border built in 2022 has been reinforced with metal bars and another layer of barbed wire. Warsaw has also installed new cameras every 200 metres along the fence to detect migrants before they even attempt to cross it.

Since 2021, Poland has seen thousands of migrants and refugees, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, attempting to enter the EU and NATO country through Belarus. Warsaw has called it a hybrid operation by Belarus and its ally Russia to increase migratory pressure and thereby destabilise the EU.

Fearing Russia, Poland has also announced it would spend over 2.3 billion euros on an "eastern shield" -- a system of military fortifications along the border, which will make it even more difficult for migrants to cross. But, according to border guards, while the overall number of crossings fell as winter arrived, it had already reached 28,500 by mid-November compared with 26,000 in total last year.

Right in the middle of the Europe's largest primeval forest of Bialowieza, Aleksandra Chrzanowska packed into plastic bags what remained of a former makeshift migrant camp -- a torn emergency blanket, medicines, shoes hidden under leaves wet from the snow. "It takes migrants between 30 hours and a week to get here. It all depends on their physical condition, whether they have children with them, and what the weather is like," said Chrzanowska, a member of Grupa Granica, a nonprofit helping migrants in distress. Its volunteers bring them water, food, dry clothes, and medicine. In case of emergency or threat to life, they administer first aid, help migrants fill out asylum application forms or serve as translators in communication with the authorities. "In the long term, this barrier, these electronic installations, do not change anything," said Chrzanowska, who added no real migration policy was implemented by the government.

According to rights groups, migrants at the border are increasingly subjected to police violence, with some suffering injuries inflicted by dog bites or rubber bullets. Some migrants have also injured themselves by jumping from the top of the fence. "Half of the patients we treat have physical injuries and mental trauma resulting from crossing the border," Uriel Mazzoli, head of Doctors Without Borders Mission in Poland (MSF), told AFP.

Border guards deny the accusations, saying that they limit themselves to responding to violence coming from migrants. Poland said at least 63 soldiers have been injured since the beginning of the year while stopping migrants from crossing the border. In June, a Polish soldier was fatally stabbed through the fence. According to the rights groups' estimates, at least 88 migrants have died on the Polish-Belarusian border since the migration influx has intensified.

Last month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a migration rules overhaul involving a temporary suspension of asylum rights for irregular migrants. For Chrzanowska, this announcement was "very worrying", as it would mean "an absolute violation of fundamental human rights, of the right to seek international protection."

According to the MSF official, the infrastructure installed by Poland on its eastern border traps people in a no-man's-land between the two countries.

Funfact: AboTak! is a play of word - Abo is short for "abortion", Tak means "yes", together it will be translated as "just because".

Abortion Without Borders and Abortion Dream Team - the biggest abortion providers network in Poland and Europe opens their own clinic. But it's fully funded by individual donations, so abortionists ask you for support. Any, even the smallest, donation will be a huge help!

If you can organize some kind of fundraiser, like event/auction or anything else, please contact with AboTak via email kontakt@abotak.org

The more they try to ban abortion, the more we expose it to the sun. That's why WE OPEN THE FIRST STATIONARY ABORTION CLINIC IN POLAND! WE ARE OPENING AN ABOTAK CLINIC IN WARSAW!

We call ourselves the Abortion Dream Team, and for years we have been doing much more than the Polish state to expand access to abortion in our country. Eight months have passed since the change of power, and legal abortion or even abortion guidelines from the Ministry of Health are still not in sight. That's why we're not waiting idly for a change, and we're opening a space that will set standards and identify good practices of abortion care, put pressure on the government to introduce appropriate laws, and on doctors to learn how to do surgical abortions in accordance with WHO guidelines. It will also be a space where you can find our colorful sweatshirts and t-shirts, as well as works by Polish female artists and books in the climate of the ABOTAK clinic! But in order for this miracle on the Vistula to come to fruition, we need cash! Contribute to our fundraising for the premises and become an ambassador of ABOTAK clinic!

Kobiety w Sieci's disclaimer:

Thank you for reminding it! The government not only keep current law. They also shall publish recommendations for courts and medics. Health Ministry shared document focused on law, not even including instructions of contemporary, safe medical procedures. Polish doctors use old, dangerous methods, don't know how to dose drugs for medical abortion or run vaccum aspiration, sometimes even do c-section - not even an abortion method. This guides are contrary to WHO's recommendations. Health department do not call doctors to learn new standards, used in other countries for decades. Do not urge madical schools to include abortion into syllabus. Medics who can't help in abortions can't provide good care after natural miscarriages. Ministry of Health chosen the most harmful for women, interpretation of law. It's exactly the same as the previous government's one. Polish abortion and reproductive health organisations, including Abortion Without Borders (the biggest network providing abortion in europe), prepared new guidelines, based on WHO's and FiGO's recommendations. In Polish! Ready to implement! Ministry of Health got this document from us and IGNORED IT. In Poland help in an abortion is criminalised, so every woman can be treated as the witness of a crime. Police is overeager, often don't know the law and operates against women and their loved ones well-being and safety. We have exaples of searching the cesspools, because women miscarriage!!! At the same time general procurator reminds they can commandeer women's phones and computers- witness'! The biggest party, theoretically declaring support for abortion legalisation, in reality is ultra conservative and missed opportunity to change the standards as permitted by applicable law. We do what we can, but we need also the international pressure on government. We deeply appreciate if any media can share our point of view, as real abortion providers in Poland (we do as many abortions in 4 days, as all Polish hospitals in a year!). Thank you❣️

Bugging devices were found in a room where Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was scheduled to meet with his Cabinet on Tuesday, an official said.

The Cabinet ministers were meeting in Katowice, a southwestern Polish city where Tusk was attending an economic conference.

Jacek Dobrzyński, the spokesperson for the head of Poland’s secret services, said a routine security check uncovered equipment that could be used for recording or eavesdropping.

He wrote on social media on Tuesday morning that “the State Protection Service, in cooperation with the Internal Security Agency, detected and dismantled devices that could be used for eavesdropping in the room where the meeting of the Council of Ministers is to be held today in Katowice.”

“The services are conducting further activities in this matter,” he added.

The Cabinet traditionally holds a weekly meeting in Warsaw but exceptionally held it in Katowice due to the European Economic Congress taking place there, at which European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech.

Tusk and the government ministers went to Katowice on Tuesday morning by train.

Some context: he was about to be prosecuted for leading a hater group supporting the last (PiS) administration by attacking neutral and opposition aligned judges (often based on illegal sources). Then, after being outed, he snitched on the group itself, causing major issues for the faction of the ex-ruling party which controlled the ministry of justice (and most of the court system). So he was either going to be legally persecuted or 'taken care of' by his own ex-friends, and might have been pushed to a jurisdiction which will not cooperate with Polish authorities. Common joke is that "there he'll be granted anything he wants for the rest of his life". Last Polish soldier-defector 'hang himself' after 4 months, and a propaganda tour, in Belarus.

After eight years of government under the far-right nationalist Law and Justice party, Polish voters turned up in record numbers in a historic October election that heralded a new, liberal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

After being sworn-in in December, Tusk's new government immediately moved to retake the state-funded TVP. Under Law and Justice, the broadcaster had been transformed into a far-right propaganda machine, jeopardizing European Union funding to the country for violating the EU's democracy standards.
