ESA’s Earth Observation Programme Board has selected Biomass in May 2013 to become the seventh Earth Explorer mission. The innovative satellite aims to map and monitor one of Earth’s most precious resources.

The satellite will be designed to provide, for the first time from space, P-band radar measurements that are optimised to determine the amount of biomass and carbon stored in the world’s forests with greater accuracy than ever before.

This information, which is poorly known in the tropics, is essential to our understanding of the role of forests in Earth’s carbon cycle and in climate change.

Reliable knowledge of tropical forest biomass also underpins the implementation of the UN Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) initiative – an international effort to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and land degradation in developing countries.

In addition, the measurements made by Biomass offer the opportunity to map the elevation of Earth’s terrain under dense vegetation, yielding information on subsurface geology and allowing the estimation of glacier and ice-sheet velocities, critical to our understanding of ice-sheet mass loss in a warming Earth.

Please feel free to post updates and questions in the comments!

🌍 TerraMind: A breakthrough in global-scale Earth observation!
Developed by JSC, IBMResearch , @esa , and @DLR this any-to-any multimodal model fuses satellite imagery, elevation data, land use maps & language. TerraMind leads the field on the PANGAEA benchmark.

Recently, we got one of our best views yet of the tiny moon when a European mission named Hera, en route to the asteroid Didymos, flew through the Martian system for a gravity assist. During this transit, the spacecraft came within just 300 km of Deimos.

French rocket builder Latitude has announced its successful completion of the first hot fire test of a flight-ready version of its Navier rocket engine’s combustion chamber.

Founded in 2019, Latitude is developing a two-stage rocket called Zephyr that will initially be capable of delivering up to 100 kilograms to low Earth orbit. The company is currently targeting 2026 for the rocket’s inaugural flight.

On 8 April, the company announced it had reached a significant milestone in the development of Zephyr with the first pressurised ignition test of the Navier engine’s combustion chamber in its flight configuration. The ten-second test was conducted at the company’s Titan testing centre in Vatry, near Reims, using its new, purpose-built test bench. According to the company, the data collected from the successful test will inform its upcoming long-duration tests.

Zephyr, which will stand 19 metres tall, will use seven Navier engines on its first stage and one vacuum-optimised Navier engine on its second.

¡Qué importante es la divulgación científica! Juan Luis Cano de @esa hoy nos ha aclarado muchas dudas sobre la defensa planetaria. Ha sido una magnífica intervención.

The European Space Agency (ESA) released the first batch of images and data for its Euclid space telescope. The images focus on Euclid’s three deep field areas, patches of sky the telescope will observe dozens of times to peer deep into the cosmos. Though the new release only contains Euclid’s first look into these areas, it has already provided astronomers with a treasure trove of data on galaxies and other cosmic phenomena.
