I hope it's allright to post this here as it's not just about Linux Audio, so please let me know if I should move this elsewhere.

Well, I guess we are all in the same boat when it comes to trying to grow communities here on Lemmy so we can provide information on certain topics here as well (and making the platform more attractive for others in the long run).

There are a bunch of Questions concerning Linux Audio / Music Production scattered across many communities and instances - which is great for decentralisation reasons, but also makes everything a bit difficult to find. So, I thought I'd collect some threads and communities that might be interesting for a start to help others figuring things out in the future.

When I joined Lemmy, I struggled a lot with search on here, and as I looked for anything concerning the keywords 'Linux Audio', I stumbled across this post: Any interest in a Linux Audio community? --> https://feddit.uk/post/25295 so I assumed there would not be any active community yet.

I searching for a native OTT alternative for Linux some one can recommend something ?

How to record both audios ( Microphone - from my end ) , ( Speaker - from students end ) for an online class ( Google meet ) ? There is no need for video recording. And the browser will be Firefox.

Does anyone have any reference material like a video or guide that made sense to them for how to route live audio in linux?

Most guides I see for music software on Linux seem to focus on Midi keyboards and audio generation on linux, rather than capturing live sound and working with that signal.

Context:

I have played guitar for a long time, and worked with and loved GNU/Linux for ~5 years. But I have never really married the two hobbies.

I use digital/modelling rigs all the time. And I know all of those pieces of gear I love are just little specialized computers.

I don't really have an interest in recording. But the idea of using my GNU/Linux computers as a modeling rig for home fun has always intrigued me.

I found something called a "plugin host" named "Element" by Kushview. It seems to be the perfect tool for what I am looking for.

But I cannot figure out the basics of how to select just the input of my audio interface, get it to route through something like an EQ, and then exit out to my speakers.

I remember having this issue back when I tried Ubuntu Studio a few years back and read about Jack, but could never figure it out when I was trying to understand how to use Ardour. A DAW like that, Garageband, Cakewalk, and others always felt like overkill for what I was looking to do, and it was difficult to understand how to work with those. Which is also difficult because it means I don't really have much of a frame of reference for how to use these "plugin hosts".

I've been using Linux exclusively for over 10 years but I never really understood how things like ALSA/PulseAudio/PipeWire work.

As far as I can remember, I've used pavucontrol for adjusting my settings.

I've noticed that when I'm changing playback volume in Clementine (recently Strawberry, which is its fork) the volume slider in pavucontrol is changing as well -- OK, this means they are connected, or even "the same thing"?

But looks like both of them are working with different percentage numbers? How is this possible and what kind of setting/configuration should I look for if I want to change it? Or is it simply a bug in the player? (Both Clementine and Strawberry behave the same way.)

In this particular case, it bugs me because in the way how my audio is set up now (client is forwarding via module-tunnel-sink, server is Raspberry Pi with USB card and speakers connected via 3.5 jack), all acceptable volume levels as shown in the player are under 10%, which makes the player UI slider pretty much unusable. I'd still prefer to use this UI to set the volume, though.

So while I'd like to fix this particular issue, I'd also like to have a better insight in how PW works and eventually have a better strategy of controlling audio volumes from various sources. My current strategy is "once my 4-5 commonly used sources work, don't ever touch it again and don't ever play stuff from any unknown (web!) players, lest you and your neighbors are heading for a nasty midnight surprise", which is a lame strategy.

Highlights

• Fix a critical bug that would refuse to update the samplerate or buffersize in JACK clients.
• A new module-netjack2-driver and module-netjack2-manager were added that are compatible with NETJACK2. This allows PipeWire to become a NETJACK2 manager or a driver between JACK2 or PipeWire servers.
• Support was added for firewire devices with FFADO. This is untested for now and MIDI is not implemented yet.
• The node scheduling was optimized some more. - External drivers are now as efficient as in-server ones. This should improve performance of various drivers such as bluetooth and JACK based drivers.
• Many, many bug fixes and a ton of improvements.

Vital has a subscription-based model, giving access to proprietary presets and settings, etc.

Vitalium seems to be the free/libre code, expurged from the part connecting to Vital.audio server (anyways, users of free/libre versions are excluded from connecting to it....)

A VERY impressive piece of software synth, apparently rather recent project. super-promising!
