I think they are leaving out something quite important in this blog post - nobody is using their real names here.

It's very different from Meta or Google or whatever big tech company people have accounts on, where they know your real name and many more details, such as phone number and address.

I don't see the privacy danger in someone sweeping up what we are talking about here, since we are pseudo anonymous. Am I missing something?

Whats the value of random aliases discussing something and why is that a privacy issue?

Or have I misunderstood entirely?

Hey, i'm a software developer and i'm considering trying to build a site using ActivityPub, but i have a few concerns about it. My first concern is that if the platform is open source someone can host a malicious version of it, where certain requests may be ignored (such as deletion).

This leads into my next concern which is GDPR, because now i can't be certain that a users data gets deleted upon their request and i'm not certain whether i would be liable since my instance federates with the malicious instance (which may also not be hosted in the EU which is itself problematic, and even if i'm not liable it's still not great).

I considered if it was viable to make the platform invite based somehow, so that it doesn't federate with everything by default, but that also sort of defeats the purpose of using ActivityPub.

The loss of control over content is also something that i don't particularly like, since some people may use their own instance for harassment or something else gross, but i guess that wouldn't be my problem since i just wrote the code and wouldn't have anything to do with the hosting of such sites.

i'd appreciate any feedback since i think the technology and the fediverse is very interesting, i would definitely like to try it out, but i'm not sure how to go about these challenges.

El vídeo sobre @Mastodon i @fediverse l'he vist, però em surt com a sospitós a l'Antivirus. Per què per veure'l has de mostrar la teva IP?🤔

O sigui, Mastodon està dins del @fediverse, ah!

The issue with e-commerce is mostly the same as that of social media, there are only a couple of platforms hence they can dictate everything for the users. So do you think the fediverse could also benefit e-commerce or could there be something resembling the fediverse but for e-commerce?

Can someone help me with how peertube P2P works? I can understand how ActivityPub is used for all the "social" parts but I'm a bit confused about the actual video player.

Redundancy:
I have my own instance and I made a redundancy of a video from the blender instance. if I watch the video on my instance I see 2 peers, my instance and the blender one. I can seen both in Firefox dev tools.
If I watch the same video on the blender instance I see 7 peers, the blender instance, mine, and others. why are these extra peers not showing on my instance? do I need to do something? If I watch the video on one of these other instances mine does show up in the their peers list.

I also made a video from framatube redundant but my instance doesn't appear as a peer on framatube.

Client P2P:
If I watch a video does my browser share It over P2P? if so what is the point of this? it seems to lose the video as soon as I leave the page so this functionality seems a bit useless to me.

EDIT: Answered in comments.

BitTorrent:
If I download a video I get the option of a BitTorrent torrent. If I seed this torrent can it be leeched by web clients? I tried and It doesn't show up in the peer list. What's the point of running a full BitTorrent tracker if it doesn't work with the main P2P system?

EDIT: BitTorrent is incompatible with webtorrent that peertube uses. Peertube also uses HLS instead of webtorrent and behaves a bit different (you can't seed it with a webtorrent client).

Peer discovery:
As I said in 1 and 2 how does the player actually find peers? Is there something like DHT or a tracker built in to peertube? if it's an internal tracker how does the tracker find peers?

EDIT: It uses a tracker build in to peertube.

Thanks for any help.

For those who don't know, a.gup.pe is an independent service that brings group behaviour (somewhat like communities here) to mastodon. It's kinda nice and quite a few use it on mastodon.

See https://a.gup.pe/

Interestingly, it seems you can subscribe to one of their groups from lemmy!?

I just tried !blackmastodon@a.gup.pe and it seems to have worked and showed up in the community search! Not sure if posts are actually federating though, which would make sense as many might not know about this.

This might be a nice example of the two platforms being pretty compatible with each other??

Is "defederated" instances a synonym for "blocked" instances? are they read-only without interactions or they can't even be read from other instances?

E.g: if beehaw is defederated can I still browse its subs from lemmy.world?

I really want to nip threads in the bud. Besides blocking threads.net itself, defederate from any instances that do not. This is blatantly an EEE strategy and a united front is the only way to save what have been accomplished. Here is how Indivudals can do it on mastodont as an example to follow. https://hachyderm.io/@crowgirl/110663465238573628 Edit found this , https://fedipact.online/ please sign.

We really shouldn't take this Meta thing lightly.

They could offer the slickest interface and keep people locked to their friends. That interface can use protocols that make it difficult/impossible for non-Threads instances to play ball (ooh this cool new feature is only available through the Threads app; Oh, mybasement.world.ml.xyz can't read that content). There are many ways to Embrace, Extend, and Extinguish, we've seen Meta do it before (e.g. XMPP), and I'm sure we haven't even thought of some ways Threads could EEE.

I think defederation from Meta's instances is probably our only option to protect what we have.

@feditips @fediverse Is there a Fedi version of something like Facebook Groups? Social circles for a specific topic? Calckey looks like it has something similar but they are currently not federated and also I've found the platform in general to be very unstable.

A large corporate shopping mall settles in a nice neighborhood with small local run shops and community centers. The new shopping mall says 'if we settle here, more people will come, and you all will benefit'. A few years later all small shops are bankrupt and the community is destroyed. What remains is a barren corporate landscape.

Federated Code forges have been an ongoing development for some time, but their introduction could provide a way to connect many different projects and organizations across the web, using the ActivityPub-based ForgeFed spec.

An Android app for Meta's federated Twitter competitor was accidentally leaked, and people are already datamining it for clues.

Has anyone thought of resurrecting the concept of URNs for Lemmy/Federated content? I just ask as it seems as one way to start thinking about reducing the link rot caused when something like imgur or gfycat goes private or offline. As it stands...a ton of lemmy instances brought up in the last few weeks will be gone in a month.

Something like an URN would be useful if there was some concept of 'super-federation', where two or more instances of the same service chose to cross-store data

Browsers don't support URNs currently, and the lookup/registry system would be potentially vast and full of duplicates, but it seems worth thinking about.

Hey guys! I was wondering if Mastodon is down or something cause I’ve been trying to login and see all the content there but apparently it’s either really slow or it’s just straight not even working. I did check my internet but it’s working for me on all other websites. Just wanted to make sure!

I'm gonna cheat a bit and say that the channels on TILvids are really good.

Any other recommendations? Anybody want to self promote?
