Fediverse is a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe".

I'm happy to announce that the a.gup.pe Mastodon groups now federate into Lemmy. Previously they were just empty communities, but now they're being filled with content. Fantastic news.

You can see the federation working properly at !bookstodon@a.gup.pe

If this has been the case for ages and I'm just the last person to notice, I'm sorry.

The Mixtape is an ongoing effort by We Distribute to showcase the musicians of the Fediverse and their work. Each issue is a playlist of 10 tracks centered around a theme, that our followers can vote on.

For Issue #4, it's SPACE VIBES! These are various themes of discovery, exploration, travel, and danger. Even if the tracks aren't explicitly about space, we put them together based on the complementary vibe and feeling, and interpreted them.

Is decentralised federated social media over engineered?

Can't get this brain fart out of my head.

What would the simplest, FOSS, alternative look like and would it be worth it?

Quick thoughts:

* FOSS platforms intended to be big single servers, but dedicated to ...
* Shared/Single Sign On
* Easy cross posting
* Enabling and building universal Multi-platform clients.
* Unlike email, supporting small servers

No duplication/federation/protocol required, just software.

When registering a country code domain, keep in mind where the domain is being registered. A shift in government or geopolitics can have serious consequences.

Seems like an interesting effort. A developer is building an alternative Java-based backend to Lemmy's Rust-based one, with the goal of building in a handful of different features. The dev is looking at using this compatibility to migrate their instance over to the new platform, while allowing the community to use their apps of choice.

I made a blog post on my biggest issue in Lemmy and the proposed solutions for it. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

The irony of crossposting this is not lost on me

Constantly users from lemmy.world and lemm.ee are downvoting posts in languages other than english.

If you do not understand and don't wanna see it just use the filters.

Go to settings and select the languages you know, plus "undetermined". That's it.

people who are seeing this, plese let your instances admins know of this problem and comunicate the instance users.

Thanks

Hey guys, with all of your help I would like to get a running list of apps for Fediverse platforms. In such a short time we’ve had so many apps develop and they’ve provided some incredible experiences. For those that have been on Fedi for some time, newer and those that will come, these client apps will play major roles in our experience. Please help me and join me in listing apps. Thanks in advance.

Sora is a really cool iOS fediverse app that supports Mastodon, Misskey, Firefish, and Bluesky all at once. It's slick, has some incredibly innovative features, and is a delight to use.

We sat down with Hoshida, and talked about his journey into app development, his discovery of the Fediverse, and some of the lessons he learned in making an app that suited his needs.

This is what makes the Fediverse so frustrating, been using: #Kbin #FireFish #Mastodon #Friendica #IceShrimp #Lemmy.

And no, they don’t speak to one another / find one another or are able to follow / like / reply to one another as one is told the Fediverse works.

The truth: some speak to some, and it rarely works both ways. Eg. Mastodon can do a lot more interacting with Lemmy, but not the other way around.

And then there are those that defederate from their own kind / federated social network, splintering the Fediverse even further apart.

Have had to either join new servers + delete current accounts, just because the server that was suggested, happened to be a server that others chose to defederate with.

Now with many accounts + many instances, been trying to find the best place to just have one space in the Fediverse + be able to communicate, follow and interact with other Fediverse users.

Maybe it’s this is wrong, but this has been the experience for almost a year now.

EDIT: APOLOGY

Seems like there are multiple posts, that was not the intention. :-(

English isn’t first language. Was trying to do the “change my mind” meme format they use on other sites to ask someone to prove you wrong, which is what was hoped for.

Apologies again.

This makes no sense, really sorry. Made a post and when looking for it, it just showed nothing. Look here is a screenshot of my personal feed. It only shows the comment on a fediverse post, which I then created into a stand-alone post, in hoping someone would be able to explain or prove me wrong.

And I can’t even go and delete the posts, as when looking inside the posts on my profile, it shows nothing either.

REALLY sorry for the multiple posts, thought the app was bugging out. :-(

Really sorry. Will check on laptop to see if I can find and delete the multiple posts from there…

Three months ago I posted about the Atlantic Council’s interest in the controlling the fediverse: https://lemmy.ml/post/6641106

I think these projects are the continuation of the successful American “intelligence community” censorship of corporate social media platforms. They even tried to formalize the system two years ago as the Disinformation Governance Board.

Title. I have seen this issue in the past, but I just stumbled across a post where the difference is massive (as of today, 14 January 2024):

316 upvotes and 173 comments on lemmy.sh.itjust.works

https://sh.itjust.works/post/6400367

vs

-13 upvotes and 7 comments on lemmy.zip

https://lemmy.zip/post/3556131

for no apparent reason (i.e. lemmy.zip doesn't seem to be blocking the instances the missing comments are coming from and those instances aren't blocking lemmy.zip either). What's going on here?

Is the issue solved as of today?

P.S. Here's how the post appears on other instances

This podcast has been a long-time coming. Damon, Laurens, and I have been hard at work interviewing all kinds of people building for the Fediverse, and after hours and hours of interviews, we’ve finally started publishing episodes.

Decentered is our attempt to shine a light on all of the amazing things happening across the network: it’s a place where we talk to some of the brightest minds developing amazing concepts, and their vision of what’s possible. Join us as we cover what’s going on in the network, and what we’re all making together!

Hello folks,

TL:DR

  • Solid enables a dencentralized, user owned data storage and SSO
  • ActivityPods adapts its functionality to the fediverse

Slowly, things have smoothed out for the fediverse and it has become an everyday thing or even a new home on the internet for many of us. And yet I still don't feel that I can utilise the full potential of this network.

One of the biggest arguments in favour of the fediverse has always been that you can communicate with all other services regardless of which service you use and that it doesn't really matter where you register because you still receive all the messages. The reality is often disappointing.

Once registered with a service, you can communicate with all other services, but unfortunately often not in the format for which the other media were created. If you then try to log in to another instance with your account, you will also be disappointed - it simply doesn't work.

What we are really missing is a SingleSingOn (SSO) solution with which you can log in to any instance and any service. And it already exists! Meet the Solid project.

Solid (Social Linked Data) is a web decentralization project led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. The project "aims to radically change the way Web applications work today, resulting in true data ownership as well as improved privacy" by developing a platform for linked-data applications that are completely decentralized and fully under users' control. (Source: Wikipedia, Solid)

In short: Solid stores all your data in a decentralised data store called "pod". Anyone can host their own pod or use a pod provider. The user can then decide which data is made available to which service and can adjust it centrally at any time without much effort. This is also accompanied by the authentication method through WebID, which is handled via the Solid OIDC protocol.

Solid is designed to revolutionise the entire internet, but specifically for the fediverse there is ActivityPods, which aims to combine the advantages of Solid with the nature of the fediverse. This project will probably be the one that will give us the long-awaited interoperability thanks to SSO. And probably as early as this year!

Mbin is a decentralized content aggregator, voting, discussion and microblogging platform running on the fediverse network. It can communicate with many other ActivityPub services, including Kbin, Mastodon, Lemmy, Pleroma, Peertube. It is an open source alternative to other link aggregator services like Reddit. The initiative aims to promote a free and open internet.

Mbin is focused on what the community wants, pull requests can be merged by any repo owner (with merge rights in GitHub). Discussions take place on Matrix then consensus has to be reached by the community. If approved by the community, only one approval on the PR is required by one of the Mbin maintainers. It's built entirely on trust.

It seems it's claim to fame is being more open and accepting of community changes and improvements. It can install as either bare metal/VM or as a Docker container.

Although anyone can install it and self-host it, their project page also contains a link to various instances that already exist and which anyone can register on.

See https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin

You can define success any way you like. But I'm happy with the direction of the project, and I'm thankful for everyone who has helped make it happen.

Could not it be just like a embedded? or something that works like that?

Seems a bit wasteful to have the same content stored in hundreds (potential thousands) of servers.
