I'm a new chess player and do not understand why the solution to this puzzle is Qc2+ instead of something like Rb8, Qf5, g4 I don't really understand what black could do here to save the Queen?

I personally don't know any gambit, I just try to play the opining following the basic principles. I saved this list from a comment in Reddit time ago:

Unavoidable 2nd move gambits:

  • King's Gambit against 1.e4 e5.
  • Smith-Morra against the Sicilian.
  • Staunton Gambit against the Dutch.
  • Blackmar-Diemer Gambit against 1.d4 d5.
  • Tennison Gambit against the Scandinavian.
  • Grob Gambit against 1.g4 d5.

Avoidable depending on the opponents follow-up but easy to get:

  • Evans Gambit in the Italian.
  • Traxler against the Knight Attack (Italian).
  • Albin Countergambit against the Queen's Gambit.
  • Stafford in the Petrov.

Let's do a small Fediverse chess tournament! Everyone is welcome to join!

We will play 10-minute games (10+0) on lichess, a free and open-source chess website. You will be assigned an opponent and will have 2 days to schedule and play your match.

I will decide on the structure of the tournament (brackets, groups etc.) based on the number of sign-ups here :)

Sign up by commenting here with your lichess account name.

Signup deadline is Wednesday, 2pm UTC. Shortly after, I'll announce the first pairings :)

Looking forward to some nice matches ❤️

Update:

Active round: 2

eulheim - vincenius 0 - 1

BabaDuda - /

Coolbootyjames - Fabiozeh

library_patron - CrazyMerlyn

mycowan - Caboose12000

Table

Hi, I created a chess beginners community on discuss.tchncs.de as a replacement on lemmy for r/chessbeginners

Since discoverability of communities across lemmy is not very good at the moment, maybe it makes sense to cross-reference between chess communities so that they are more easily found (reminds me a bit of the old days of the internet).

So I added a link from chessbeginners' description to !chess@lemmy.ml and would hope to see a backlink :-)

Which one do people prefer? I've personally found the chess.com UI to be a lot warmer and more inviting than lichess, but I'm interested to hear people's opinions

Hey everyone :) I'd like to organize a small tournament for lemmy users. Would anyone be interested in joining? And would you be interested in a specific time format or format? Like would you prefer a one time event or a league format etc

Cheers

1st place wintermute

2nd; liwott

3rd; straight peach

4th; sexy peach

5th; michael

6th; me

(Sorry about delay, been busy)

Until proven otherwise, wintermute is the strongest chess player on the fediverse :p

I learnt a lot of stuff about running an e-tournament. Biggest factor is needing a lot of substitutes for when people drop out. Which would make the results weird, because say wintermute drops out and I sub in for him, then i'd lose the finals.
